DIY Cupcake stand Tutorial.

Thank you to all of you who visited me and left lovely messages of encouragement in my last post about that amazing PVC storage solution for Paper. Cardboard can be a crafters best friend ! And if the words, upcycle, recycle, reuse, repurpose, sound like music to your ears, then this project will really excite you. This post is about a Cup Cake stand that I made out of cardboards, lying around in the house. I have used a sturdy double corrugated cardboard. Used three different sizes of round objects to make the various round shapes. ( Including the large clock in my studio.) When we moved into this house, the movers had used these huge rolls of plastic to cover most of the furniture which was rolled over a thick heavy circular pole. DSCF2054 DSCF2055 Next, I used my electrical jigsaw to cut the pole, which can be quite tricky since you want to get a clean cut so that the stand does not wobble, once the weight is placed on it.  I got two pieces of equal sizes from it. I dressed up the two round pole, with a nice colorful cardstock using some hot glue. DSCF2058 I am not a stickler for accurate  measurements, hence I just used my visual approximation to see if it sat well. I used E6000 to do the job of the gluing the base of the circle to the stand which will keep it upright. Took some red patterned ribbon and hot glued it all around the circumference of the stands. DSCF2063 DSCF2066 I kept some weight on the center of the stand and let it sit for nearly 2 days and later tested it with a couple of empty cups to check durability and stability. DSCF2067 DSCF2069 DSCF2071 So voila ~ here it is ! A cupcake stand made out of cardboard ! Something creative, innovative and making it convenient on the environment !

DSCF2173 DSCF2175 Although this is traditionally for cupcakes, but you can easily alter it to use it as a display piece in a store, or to keep jewelry on. The uses are only limited by your imagination ! DSCF2176 DSCF2177 I will be using a large doily before presenting the cupcakes on the cupcake stand ofcourse. If your wondering how to do so, just place the doily over the stand and roughly pencil out how much circle would need to be taken off in the center. Then make a slit any one side of the doily and cut towards the center and carry on cutting in the direction of the penciled out center circle. I did not want to place the doily already, since it might catch dust sitting on my study desk. Please give me your opinion ~ I would really appreciate it. Craft Paper Display Rack with PVC pipes.

Moving to the new house has given a huge boost to my creativity. And part of the reason is that, it is just large enough to “ALMOST” house all my supplies.

Most of the handmade paper, I carry, comes from India, and as such, their dimensions are far from the 12 x 12 traditional design scrapbooking paper. With a paper width of 26 inches ~ I had been struggling for many years but managed to keep them rolled up in baskets and open cartons and occasionally using some of them. However It was very inconvenient, mainly becoz once they were used, it became extremely difficult to put them back in the baskets/cartons. One of my main worries was how to house these papers. I browsed a lot of options on google but sadly none of the wire racks could accommodate the large sheets of thick paper. Being a very “visual” kinda person, I wanted a support system where I could see the different colors, patterns and designs in the sheets. Not somewhere where I’d have to roll them away and rely heavily on my memory.

After letting this matter simmer for nearly 3 months ~ I spotted an idea on Pinterest ( Isn’t Pinterest just the most awesome mini world, there is,  where you just don’t want to leave ever from ?? ) about how someone made an awing for a birthday table with PVC pipes !! Voila ! Still alittle unsure,  I just had to see if the PVC pipes could handle the weight of 109 sheets !! And I wouldn’t really know, until I actually came up with a plan.

Fotor06221077Yep !! This IS the plan !

So I drew a blue print and went shopping to Al quoz industrial area. (for those living in Dubai ~ Al quoz was not the best choice ~ I could have gotten better rates in Rashidiya 😦 ~ learnt from my mistake )

Fotor062205824

We used the manual jig saw coz the electric one could snap the pieces. PVC pipes are sold in very long pieces so you have to have an estimate of how much you might be working with. Again, I also included the T angles and the elbow joints as well.

Fotor06221120

If you notice the blue print carefully, you’ll notice, I made a lot of changes to the actual construction as per stability and balance needs.

I’ll let the pictures speak from here :-

Fotor062212551

The thickness of the pvc pipe, I used is 1 inch. I used a rubber hammer to fix them. Luckily, I did not have to use the PVC glue that you can see in one of the earlier pictures.

Fotor062218190

That’s my cat Pepper who just had to inspect my workmanship !! lol

Fotor062218220

And finally after years, I am ACTUALLY enjoying just watching all these gorgeous papers !!

Fotor062218292

Thats sponge on the second level from above ! I use a lot of these for painting/dabbing for stencils, mainly for my art workshops. It can be quite a nuisance to store these otherwise since they are so puffy and large 😦

Fotor0622181423

Just to show how much paper is stacked up on the rack !

Fotor0622182445

The above profile pic, can show you just how many sheets of paper of various thickness, the rack is housing.

So there you have it !!  This was my PVC project but I am so inspired by this success that a lot of more newer ideas are already churning in my brain soup ! It is a labor intensive project but the end result is so awesome and functionally great, that the hours put in are well worth it.  Although, I had planned to keep it initially closer to the stairway, It now adorns my studio’s second exit !! And yes, I keep getting asked, where I “BOUGHT” it from !! Needless to say, I see, jaws dropping as soon as I explain the whole process 🙂  What a joy !!  In so many ways, it has actually turned into a conversational piece in my studio !!

I hope you liked and perhaps even found some inspiration in this project.

Islamic poster for year 5

Brotherhood in Islam, was the topic for the poster, manu had to make. I gave him a printed copy of the various hadiths pertaining to this topic and asked him to make a verbal presentation of it.

Manu being manu ~ he is always in a hurry to get things finished, so that he informed me about this project the very day, the task was given out ~ and we had nearly 5 days before submission !!! He wanted to help as much so he could feel like it belonged to him 🙂

We decided to give it the look of a garden, with flowers speaking the hadiths (things said or done or approved by prophet Mohammed sas. We used bright happy colors and sadly, I did not have a large poster in white so we went with what was in hand, brown. Luckily the contrast of bright colors against brown was stunning !! The cloud shapes were used for larger hadiths, while the flowers were used for Quran quotes and one liners quotes. Manu is a perfectionist. He can take a long time just to write a paragraph becoz he wants all his letters to be placed properly and all the work looking neat and tidy. That can quite a challenge for a restless mom like me. Hence all the writing work was done by yours truly.

Since there were so many flowers, Manu did the cutting and I guided him with where it had to be pasted. In just two days, the poster was ready for presentation !! Although, Manu was not still ready with his oral presentation !! So we waited till he was prepared and then he handed the poster to his Islamic teacher and gave an oral presentation. Needless to say, he felt he was on cloud 9 !!! All his friends were talking about it and his teacher actually approached me, at the following PTA meeting to thank me for encouraging him and making the poster.

A happy manu makes a happy mama !!

Poster and Paper chain for International day.

My boys have a habit of reaching out to me at the 11th hour for all their school project issues. While I let them work on most of the research work, I design the content for them. In so many ways, its like going back into a different era, where I wished, we had so many creative projects to submit, rather than mugging and throwing up half a dozen chapters in exams. Todays’ education system is quite wholesome in many ways and teaches children more than just reading and reading and more reading.

Buddy had to submit a project about Siberia. He also wanted some form of decoration to go around the wall which reflected the country’s flag colors. So this is what we came up with. He has done a cute collage of the national clothes of Siberia and we did something very simple with paper chains. Honestly that late in the evening, my creative juices had dried up quite a bit. Still I think, he did a good job.

So what do you think ? The Siberians are going to be happy with it ??
