Walnut Lime Tart

This dessert combines elements from two recipes: the walnut crust from Cool Lemon Dessert (also known as Lemon Delight); and the creamy lime filling from my Schwarz Lime Pie (my spin on key lime pie using limes from my tree). I have such affection for my lime tree. If you have followed me for any length of time, you are probably sick of hearing about it – but I do. My big beautiful tree in my backyard produces the sweetest and juiciest limes I know.

Sugar Cookie Butter Bars

I have heard a bit about cookie butter and my daughter-in-law Tawni said she would love to try it sometime.   So, for Tawni I gave this recipe a whirl and manzo!  This is definitely a piece of heaven on earth, oh yummy.….  When you make it, don’t think you have to keep straightening the edges either. You know what I mean, cutting small slices to ‘even it up’, hahaha.  It really is that delicious.

Welcome to Organising Mondays – today I am sharing the top 10 things I have implemented around the house which help keep things running smoothly. I have already told you about the control journal HERE and menu planning HERE – they are number one and two which feels a bit like cheating but I would be lying if I said they weren’t.

from Love and Duck Fat

2014 Pantone Color of the Year Desserts | Radiant Orchid

I have a background in art (check out my oil paintings here), and still get a little excited every year when Pantone releases their color of the year. The Pantone color of the year for 2014 is called, “Radiant Orchid.” It’s a shade of purple with a little touch of pink. The folks at Pantone describe Radiant Orchid as, “magical, warm and intriguing—one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”

Anyway, on to Mother’s Day.  I enjoy receiving and giving homemade gifts, don’t you?  This year, I decided to use some Jute Upholstery Webbing to make Shabby Chic Cutlery Holders.

My First Spring Tablescape 2014

from Row House Events and Interiors

This year I will be joining a few of my friends that live around here who also are far away from their families to celebrate Easter.  We have reservations at the historic Eldridge hotel in Lawrence ks, for a day of catching up and what I am sure will be a fantastic time.  However the day before Easter I will host a brunch for a diferent group of people, and this is also the first time anyone sees my spring look, so I could not be more exited to finally get some feedback

DIY Spice Jars from Momdot

Update your Kitchen with Cuteness, DIY Spice Jar Technique . Inspiration from www.momdot.com

And this week after listening to hoards of decoration ideas from my friends (and feeling even more sad about my white and dull space), I decided that if I cannot create the kitchen of my dreams, I could up my kitchen cuteness by refreshing and customizing the tiny items as showcase pieces.

French Rolling Pin and Dough Bowl

from A Delightsome Life

A-DELIGHTSOME-LIFE-DOUGH-BOWL-AND-ROLLING-PIN

I went to Atlanta to retrieve an auction item we’d won – garden tools. I bid on a French style bed and was outbid. Sigh. There will be one in my future!  I thought I’d see if there were any sales in the nearby area. There was – an Estate liquidation. Most of what I saw pictured didn’t appeal to me, but I decided to visit…and am I oh, so glad I did!

Classic Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

from Old House to New Home

Cinnamon Roll recipe

This weekend was a major cooking weekend for me. I had my family over for Easter dinner, which was the first time that I hosted a holiday, and in addition to that, I baked up two things that are definitely not in my comfort zone! On a whim Saturday afternoon, I decided that I wanted to make my Grandma’s famous (they have been published!) dinner rolls. As I have mentioned here before, yeast has not always been my friend. In addition to the dinner rolls, I got the idea in my head that we NEEDED cinnamon rolls for Easter breakfast…I don’t know why I was so determined to make these, but I am so glad I did!

When You Wake Up You’ll Be Four

from Boogers Are Yucky

Sweet dreams little one.  I love that you still fall asleep snuggled in my arms on this eve of your fourth birthday.  Every age you have been has been my favorite one, so even though I’m preparing to celebrate the beginning of a new year tomorrow, I’m mourning the end of this one.  What a year it has been.  From potty training to snow skiing to freediving.  I’m in awe of you, and have been since the first time I felt you move inside my body.

Pearl Harbor Pillbox Hat from Dolly Creates

I have been looking everywhere for vintage dress patterns, so I happened to go to Sense and Sensibility Patterns’ website. Whilst browsing through the 40s and 50s categories, I saw the pattern for the Pearl Harbor Pillbox Hat. I of course fell in love with it immediately

DIY Container Garden – Planning & Planting

 from Little Greenwoods

DIY Container Garden: Planning & Planting {3littlegreenwoods.com}

Construction is complete on our DIY Container Garden. Now it’s time for planting. Yay!

But before we can get all excited about digging into our newly built garden we need to do a bit of planning about exactly what we want to grow. We also need to learn about what veggies will actually produce during our extremely hot summers.

Teaching Your Toddler About Jesus

from The Life of Faith

This is a topic very dear to my heart. My

relationship with Christ is so important, as is my relationship with my

daughter. I want so badly for my daughter to grow up knowing the Lord, and I

firmly believe that teaching her about Jesus is something that starts from the

very beginning, even now.

Best Ever Chocolate Banana Bread

from Happy, Healthy and Domestic

This chocolate banana bread is the bombdotcom! My wonderful friend and next door

neighbor, Katie,  has treated me to this wonderful bread a couple times, most

recently as a treat for my birthday and it was the perfect snack on my road trip

to SLC. I begged her for the recipe and made it for myself. I looooove it and

since it has bananas in it, I can totally have it for breakfast, right?

Upcyle Pallets to Sign Boards.

Hello friends !  Since the majority of my visitors are from USA, I hope you guys are enjoying the spring. Bet all your soil beds are ready and the herbs planted already.

Today, I’m sharing a few sign boards, I made, from pallets.

I have a brand-spanking-new silhouette machine which has found its way out of the box and 8months later, I am still no closer to using it than I was, the first time, I pulled it out of its carton 😦      Any guidance, inspiration or ‘push’ will be highly appreciated 🙂

I have free-handed the writing. It was rather difficult becoz I wrote with the sharpies and the wood was not smooth. I cant say, I’m very pleased with them but I liked the ” herb garden” quite a lot.

The humble little Dandelion has remarkable nutritional value, being very high in vitamins A and C, with more beta carotene than carrots and more potassium than broccoli or spinach, not to mention healthy doses of iron and copper for good measure. Medicinally, Dandelions are considered very safe and effective as a general tonic that helps strengthen the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, stomach, and intestines, improving bile flow and reducing inflammation in cases of hepatitis and cirrhosis. Dandelions also help to dissipate gallstones and are believed to improve kidney function, thereby improving overall health and clearing skin problems.

My whistling mother

My mother had faults and things that I couldn’t stand. And I often vowed to myself that I would never be like my mother. However, I am actually a lot like my mother, much to the shame of my teenage self. Not only do I look much more like my mother than my father (thank goodness!), with my long neck, oval face, thin eyebrows, weird fingernails, size eleven feet, and poor English circulation, teeth, and eyesight, but I act like her too

Buffalo Chicken Tortilla Pizza

A few weeks ago, I found out about the beauty of the tortilla pizza.

It was in one of my eMeals recipe lists, and I fell in love.

How did I never know about this?  Instead of worrying with pizza dough, just slap your

ingredients on a tortilla…it makes a deliciously thin crust.  You’d never know it was a tortilla!

5 Reasons to Strength Train

From Grace, Lace & Iron

Committment: This word is one that probably holds less meaning than any other word in the dictionary, to the current generation. We are a society of instant gratification. Period. We want our fast food, entertainment, and our lives to be well, uh, faster. Never mind who we hurt in the process…who cares about learning the value of people…we must get to where we’re going…AND FAST

Strawberries and Cream Pancake Roll

From Curious Cuisiniere

We love wraps for a quick, portable lunch.  We’ve only successfully rolled one set of cabbage rolls; so we need a bit of training on that one before we attempted them again. Stuffed is always good.  But, we have a lot of stuffed recipes: German Stuffed Rolls, Russian Stuffed Rolls, and the Polish version of ravioli – Pierogi.

We wanted to get out of our stuffed box. (Yup. Pun intended.)

I threw out the idea for stuffed pancakes. Sure, it’s still stuffed, but at least we would move to the breakfast realm. (And, you’ll probably be seeing those make an appearance here soon, because the idea really intrigued us.) But, Tim ran the idea a few steps further and suggested a stuffed pancake roll

Gardening

Kitchen Garden a.k.a Herb Garden

Hello friends. I have been sharing my journey from a sandlot to a peaceful and serene garden over the last couple of posts. You can view it here :- Final Garden Makeover

I read somewhere ” To plant a seed is to have hope in tomorrow.”  I don’t know how long, we may stay in this house ~ but I know, if any of our trees survive, it will be a source of joy for the next tenant.  I may not be able to enjoy the fruits of the tree but atleast, its something positive and fruitful that I left in this world where greed and consumerism has been a major cause for mass deforestation.

The kitchen Garden

We have a lovely narrow patch in the backyard right behind my kitchen, part of which was being used as my DIY work area ( more like dumping ground !! ) with loads and loads of wooden planks, pallets stacked up and paint cans everywhere.

DSCF6113_2
The dead sandlot

DSCF2020

In all my previous homes, we grew all the herbs in pots but this year, I decided to be more adventurous ~ why adventurous ? Becoz herbs don’t survive outdoors in the summer 😦  But I felt it was worth a try. We’ll see.

We bought several pots of baby plants from the nursery in Al Warsan area, which included :- Basil, coriander, Tulsi, green chilli, capsicum, aubergine, okra, green beans and tomatoes,

We also bought a few larger plants which will “hopefully” grow up to be trees such as Fig, lemon, pomergranate and Curry leaves plant.

DSCF6120_2 DSCF6121_2

After clearing that patch, we decided to use the pallets, to make large rectangle frames.  Three frames were laid next to eachother with a small gap in between. We then  prepared the bed of soil and compost and later had the plants planted.

Quite honestly, it has been just booming since then !! Very little maintenance and we’ve had an endless supply of tomatoes, green chillies, curry leaves and coriander leaves.  All the trees have rewarded us with their first fruits. Yippee !! All the photographs below are of almost 3 – 4 weeks after being planted.

And that’s where the fairy tale ends !! Ofcourse, this will not last long. Come May, the heat will dry everything out 😦   We have tied a nice canopy from Ace Hardware above the tree area so that they manage to survive the summer.  In the summer, even a tiny protection from the sun goes a long way .

So from November, right uptil now, April ~ we have been happily blessed with the fruit of our small hardwork.  Not only are the tomatoes more juicy but they are so much more sweeter than the store bought ones.

kitchen garden

If you’re living in Dubai and even if you have only a small balcony to spare, I highly recommend that you plant a few tomatoes, green chillies and coriander in pots. Just remember to give some form of elevation to support the tomato plants. You’ll be surprised and delighted at how quickly the plants grow.

I am sharing my little kitchen garden a.k.a Herb garden with all my friends at their fantastic parties here.

Link Party

Wake up Wednesday link party

Hello friends !!

If you were born in the 70s, then you probably knew what pen pals were ! (heard of them ?)  The world was too large for our small minds those days  (Without satellite TV, Internet etc ). Books were our only way to learn about the hidden treasures of the world.  A beautiful and perhaps the closest we could get to knowing a totally different culture and world, sitting right at home, was thru pen pals.  It was a lengthy process though, where you’d have to wait for nearly 10-15 days before your pal received your mail in a far away country and then it would take another 10-15 days before which you would receive your reply letter. Parents generally encouraged it too. Not only did it expose kids to various countries and cultures but it also enhanced their letter writing skills and vocabulary ! And to think, where those letter writing skills help us today !! I don’t EVER remember, the last time any one of my boys wrote a letter !!

There’s something very unique about writing or communicating on an informal platform with people you have never met. Your not worried about being judged or being discriminated. You can SHARE how much you decide, when you decide and why you decide, without being judged and criticized (for your flaws or inadequecies).

That is one of the most special aspects I like about the blog world today.  Making friends, (who know you from your profile) and accept you without being judgmental. I live in Dubai and I have made dear friends from the farthest corners of the world ~ They may seem like virtual but to me, they are real.  I read on a popular home and décor blog today, about how the author had undergone a lot of hardships in life while growing up being homeless and how having a “home” with her family, meant the whole world to her. These are intimate details about ones life that we share without inhibitions. Never the less, It takes a lot of courage to share our lessons in life to an unknown world.  It made me feel sad for her but also blessed for having a roof to call my own. Infact, I took a moment to revaluate some of my own priorities later.

Those are some of the friends we make along the way, in our journey, penning about our crafts or sharing our arts with eachother. I feel very fortunate having made friends like Angel thru this lovely link party called Wake up Wednesday.

Easter Pavlova with Lemon Curd and Yoghurt | www.pinkrecipebox.com

Usually I’m not a fan of meringue (the base of the pavlova, in case you’re unfamiliar with this dessert) but meringue is the perfect thing to make a nest-shaped Easter dessert.

If you whip the egg whites up into the right consistency, you can pipe the meringue into a curly-swirly nest shape like I did. If you’re out of piping bags, you can always dollop the mixture onto the tray and then use a spoon to create the delicate swirls and nest shape.

This was a fun vignette to create, using the pink gingerbread travel trailer and  spring flowers I purchased to use in the gardens. Since it is much to wet to work in the flower beds, I arranged the flowers around the little trailer and snapped away. A fun way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Google-Plus-SEO

I love Google+! I like it sooo much better than Facebook, mostly because it doesn’t have all the drama and personal issues that are posted all over FB, at least I haven’t seen it on G+. I also find it easier to use and more visually appealing than FB with more features, no games or requests for help building or upgrading their Post Office.

Anise Hyssop (an herb) is an excellent addition to your garden both for the herbal benefits and for attracting butterflies.  Pollinator such as the butterfly are very important for your garden and for balancing a sometimes delicate eco-system.

Now, let me tell you something about my house. If you read this blog regularly, you know I have 3 boys. Which means I don’t get to bust out my girly side all that often. My life is way more sports and dirt than princesses and glitter.

But today, my friends, I’m embracing the glitter. And gold. And all things sparkly.

Vanilla extract is one of those things that you should always have on hand in your kitchen. It just adds that little bit of flavor to so many homemade goods that just make them shine. The Final Garden Makeover !

And finally, I am absolutely delighted to share with all my blog friends my lovely garden!  From a dry barren sandlot, its taken a lot of sweat, love and perseverance to bring this change into lush green 🙂

And I love it !!!

A lot of garden accessories were also transformed while we waited for the grass to spread. View them Here

Inorder to keep the grass away from the Petunia, We have placed a large plastic/rubber tube ~ this goes into the ground nearly 1 foot. But it is an expensive buy.

These bougainvillea have also seen many years with us and although they have thrown this beautiful pink pops all over the garden, for some reason they have not given a lot of leaves this year ! hmm ~ I wonder why ??

That’s the wheel cart, that Daddy repaired below. The whole idea was to place the smaller round pots into the open space of the cart. But I rejected that decision and let it just add an ethnic look, instead.

All these pots mainly carry seasonal flowers except some of them are beds for Zenia and Desert Rose.

Here are some of the seasonal plants that we planted in the pots this December.  We bought scores and scores of these bright and happy seasonal flowers from Al Warsan. Most of them cost dhs 15 – 12 per dozen. Some however are more expensive.

Most of the seasonals can be planted by late November and will bloom till around late April/Early May.

That’s my precious xiora.

White bougunvilae  always look so pretty, Isnt it ?

This purple shrubby plant is mainly leaves but they do give out lavender colored flowers between January to Feb.

One of the best quality of the bouganvilea is that you can actually mold it into your desired shape ~ like a topiary. Doesn’t this yellow one look like a bouquet ?

And that’s all ! Rains in Dubai are an absolute blessing so I wanted to end this post with a picture of what the front yard looks like after a lovely shower 🙂

I hope you are inspired to try out alittle gardening this year. If you find so many flowers and plants overwhelming, just try out with 3 or 4 planters and some shrubs, Aloe vera or Desert rose and see how that grows ~ shrubs are resiliant and can adapt with very little water so you really cant go very wrong with them.

As for me, the real test begins now !! Now that we are looking at four awfully hot months 😦   But lets not go there, just yet 😦

When I was growing up, both my mom and my grandma had green thumbs so as much as I didn’t really bother about gardening or looking after plants, I guess, it came naturally once I got married 🙂  I am not a professional at gardening by any means, I used to read a lot of books when I had started balcony gardening, initially around 10 years back ~ kept learning by trial and error and I am thankful for all those mistakes coz it made me a wiser gardening person, today.

I am sharing this post with my dear friends at the following parties here .

I have made cornbread and cornbread muffins in the oven before, but hadn’t yet tried a yeasted one in the breadmaker.  I tweaked the recipe and came up with a delicious version.

Cacao vs. Cocoa: What's The Difference?, cacao Pods, cacao beans, theobroma, superfood,

How delicious is chocolate? Ummmmm it’s so delicious, but there’s also a lot of confusion about chocolate—what type to eat, how much, and what types to avoid.

So I decided it was time to get educated about all the new research on chocolate.

Hey there!!  Have you noticed

signs of Spring?  I sure

have!  It seems that one

day it is frozen winter and the next Spring is just bursting around us.

Saturday evening I attended a really fun baby shower for a friend and fellow navy wife. Our husbands are on the same sub and work in the same division, and she’s one of the few wives from the sub that I’ve actually gotten to know. Anyhoo, she is due to have her baby on March 18th, and she’s having a girl. During our conversations I asked and listened for information about things she liked for the baby.  She mentioned ladybugs, chevrons, pink, gray, and she told me she wanted me to make a blanket. So I acted like I didn’t feel up to making a blanket, but I really was making one, of course. Originally, I wanted to make a pink, gay, black, and white chevron blanket, but I didn’t like the pattern I was using, so I went back to what I know, granny square.  So I made a 30 x 30 gray, pink, and white granny square blanket with a crochet ladybug applique.

Topped with a rich cream cheese frosting, this lovely cake will make you think of Spring. Beautifully simple with no extra add-ins: just carrots and nuts and a hint of cinnamon throughout moist, tender cake. Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting is a classic for any time of year, but is especially good for a special Easter dessert.

But this year we decided just to make our toffee because we wanted to enjoy our 2 toddler princesses running around in kitchen. Toffee is not too messy and it makes up fairly quickly into an amazing treat and we only had one pot going at once so we could switch off duties.  We even finished before my husband came home to take us out to dinner (the traditional ending of our day).  It was great!

The one thing homesteaders have in common, no matter how much land you live on, is that we are all trying to do more for ourselves. Our family for instance gardens, taps maple trees, cures meat, bakes and so on. But, because of where we live we can’t raise large livestock. And for now, that’s okay because we know people who can. We don’t have an orchard in our yard, but we know where to go to get apples. You see, we have gotten to know farmers, lots of them! What we can’t do here, we can partner with others to get done. If you have never been to a “FARM” you really should look for one, or two, or three to go visit. Visits to farms can be entertaining, educational, and think of the things you can eat!

Happy Spring, everyone!

Sharing these cookies I made to celebrate spring though she never shows up here on our side of the pond. It was still summer the last time I checked!
