Tutorial – how to upcycle twigs in a frame

Hello friends.

I am delighted that I will be sharing this post with Fluster Buster.  Infact I am excited that I will be contributing one of my projects every month with Fluster Buster !!

doodle buddies upcycle frame 1

I am drawn towards art which serves a purpose and helps the environment as well.  Art with found objects like plastic bottles and salvaged wood chunks is so much fun and gratifying too.

I love giving a new lease of life to the forsaken, the forgotten, and the overlooked items lying in the corners of our home.

Old, beat up photo frames are some of my favorite ‘patients’

Today I am using some twigs from my backyard and a picture frame which did not have a backboard and lacked a glass front as well – perfect for this project.

  • Frame
  • Glue gun
  • Spray paint
  • twigs
  • washi tape
  • foam heart embellishments (flowers, leaves, stars or any other embellishments can be used.)
  • Cardboard (stripes of cardboard for support in the back)
  • brads

I believe, crafters can breath life into any mundane object with their glue guns and some spray paint  🙂

This frame is ideal as a handmade gift or perfect to adorn the Valentine days mantle.

I hope you liked this frame and might consider attempting something similar.

DIY Tutorial – Upcycle Broken Frame

I love to salvage ‘stuff’.  I, almost always find inspiration ‘especially’ in broken items.  Unfortunately that also means, that alot of broken items don’t land up in the rubbish bin immediately in my home. (as they should) eg Broken mugs are stored to be used as mosaic material

Would you believe this frame was an empty shell with no base/back or glass infront and now — Ta da !!

we will help you

This frame was found in one of my frame piles and I decided to FINALLY work some of my magic on it.

upcycle broken frame 1

I absolutely love the HOPE sign below, but one of our new fosters (kitten) jumped high enough, to break it.

upcycle broken frame 8

Like I said, its not THAT EASY for things to be chugged in the bin – – –   at my place !!

(the fact that my husband and sons are fed up of my habit is another story for another day though  )

Long story short –

I decided somehow the HOPE sign and the frame would look good together. Here’s a simple tutorial of what followed.

upcycle broken frame 2
The frame did not need to be sanding, so I proceeded with two coats of acrylic paint.
upcycle broken frame 3
Found this light weight, foam backing for the base/back. The frame had hooks intact on the back so I measured the black foam and cut to fit in the back of the frame.
upcycle broken frame 6
For the background, I got some cardboard and painted colors – colors that are generally out of my comfort zone eg yellow, purple, blue !
upcycle broken frame 5
I applied some DAP instant Grab adhesive to glue the two broken spaces on the HOPE letters.
upcycle broken frame 7
Let it rest for atleast 12 -14 hours.
collage art 1
Having painted stripes of cardboard, I went on to roughly place the stripes on the black base foam board to see how the pattern looked.
collage art 2
I decided, I did not want a symmetrical pattern and wanted a random distressed look . I snipped the excess cardboard which had exceeded the black foam’s border.
collage art 3
I measured and placed smaller pieces of cardboard on the empty edges
collage art 7
Then I hot glued all the pieces along with regular PVA glue for additional strength.
collage art 8
Finally I placed the frame over and adhered it from behind.

  • I wanted to give a 3D effect to the sign hence I added a piece of cardboard on the back of the HOPE sign at two places and hot glued the sign to the colorful background.   That way, it gives a popping out impression.
  • I have added random thin golden paint strokes to conceal the spots where it had broken – in turn giving it a more marble-like effect.
  • It is necessary to give one coat of modge podge or varnish on the entire frame and background – so as to make it more durable and it will be easy to clean it in future too (from dust etc since it does not have a glass covering)

I absolutely love how this turned out.  Did you like it too ??

I am sharing this post with my lovely blog buddies here.

Really glad you dropped by today.

Hope you  have a bright and happy day.

Christmas Decor – Upcycle a photo frame to a wreath.

Thinking out- of- the- box comes naturally to some, while some of us have to figure out this  thought process.

Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath

I’ve made several frame projects and plenty of wreaths, however, this time, I’m creating a mix of the two !

I took a few baubles of various sizes and hot glued them on the back of a picture frame which had a damaged glass. Naturally it was a perfect candidate for my experiment 🙂

For those of you who visit me regularly, already know, by now, that nothing gives me more pleasure than breathing a new lease of life into old, damaged goods.   Most of my frames are bought at Ikea as is section,  Pan Emirates or  garage sales.   Its a shame that here, in Dubai, we have places where we can donate our clothes, shoes or even books – but there aren’t any places like the  charity stores in the West.  So most of us put up garage sales or join the only flea market available here 😦

What do you do with broken or damaged frames ?

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this easy and festive creation.

Recycled objects :-

  • Damaged photo frames
  • Previous years baubles

Tutorial DIY -Easy Upcycled Photo Frame

Hello friends,

Do you like to quill ?  I love quilling and I really like collecting  photo frames as well as  frames for paintings.  This project is an ideal mix of both.

Most of my picture frame collection comes from stores like Pan Emirates,  Home Center, Ikea as is section and garage sales.

I’m almost obsessed with finding potential in unexpected mundane objects which are considered trash. Some projects start immediately, while some bare bones, are stacked in the shed, on a waiting list.

The past two weeks, I have been super inspired to work with frames, so at long last, a pile of photo frames are being repurposed and dressed with some simple and easy art. This one, being the first one.

Our guests are pleasantly surprised when they find out that the creations are my own !

I believe, alittle creativity, color and innovation can transform the ugliest objects into pieces of art.

Here is one Ikea frame which I found in the ‘as is’ section which did not have a glass protection in front.  Ofcourse, I was overjoyed 🙂

It was perfect for my three dimensional quilled heart.

I love the contrast of the white frame against a cardboard background – with pink and red flowers in the foreground.  The pearls were a last minute addition but i feel, they really enhance the look of the flowers.

Infact, I think, I will start a wall gallery for all my art frames projects.

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this frugal simple creation.

Recycled objects :-

  • Photo frame
  • corrugate cardboard.
  • scraps of scrapbook design paper.

Upcycle Ideas For Photo Frame.

Jewelrydisplay ideas

Hello friends.

So, a couple of months back, when I was hosting the trunk show for my handmade jewelry, I bought a load of display stands/items from a lady who had closed down her Gold Jewelry store. ( Her friend was helping her sell her stands) You can find that collection here : An unbelievable haul.

There were various colors, and in relatively presentable state. (Not the best though)

All those of you, who have ever participated in exhibitions, fairs or small shows, must be all too aware of the importance and hassles involved in merchandising and issues with table space 😦

Most of my newly sourced display items were ‘on the table display’ hence, i had to come up with innovative ideas to display my jewelry in relation

  • with height
  • preferably stand alone pieces

A little bit of juggling, and I managed to upcycle a few things lying around in the house, like –

I love art and picture frames.  I am happy to buy them from stores like Pan Emirates, or  garage sales or Ikea as-is section or even dubizzle.  The maids rooms is choker full with large size frames ! ( luckily we don’t have a maid so that room is ‘converted’ into the art storage.

So anyways, here are how the frames looked.  They are in excellent condition. I just added a back support so that the frames would act as a shadow box without a glass in the front. A couple of nails were also gently tapped on it, so as to hang the necklaces.

I will be sharing a post on all the trunk shows as well as exhibitions, that I participated in, where you will find these darlings displaying my handmade jewelry.

I don’t consider myself all too frugal but I love to upcycle or repurpose – passionately.  I come from a society where upcycling is frowned upon. People who upcycle are considered stingy or cheap.  But in all honesty, I find such a society, people and systems – very shallow.  One has to learn to look beyond today .. we have already flooded dear ol earth with tons of garbage with all the consumerism and commercialization. Isn’t it time, we just wake up and do something about it ??

There are some people who wish to ignore global warming and there are some people who believe its REAL and that we should’ave done something about it ALREADY a few decades back.

I just believe, that each one of us can and should, make a difference – BUT that cumulative effort CAN make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things.  We cannot exhaust our natural resources to fulfill our immediate greed and leave our future generations devoid of basic necessities.  There are places like South Africa who are suffering water shortages already !!

A few years back I was conducting “Save the Environment” workshops where I would visit local schools and educate kids with a complete presentation with facts and figures of how we are depleting our natural resources and how we can come up with simple ways to curb wastage. It was followed by crafts where we repurposed items which are generally dumped.  It was a very gratifying experience. Unfortunately, I got a full time job alittle later and I could not conduct those workshops after that 😦

I believe, positive, constructive and progressive values should be inculcated into children from a tender age.  It should not be a SUBJECT which is studied in their O’levels or A’levels.  If anything, its too late by then 😦

Please do let me have your views too.

12 Ways with Salt Dough !

Hi Friends !!

As the year is coming to a close, I pray, mother nature does not give us all any more, unexpected unpleasant surprises !!

My post today is about the many ways to use Salt Dough.  Salt dough and I go a long way back. When Buddy was 3, nearly 11 years back, I came across a recipe for salt-dough and got hooked to it !!    I find salt-dough as the easiest and most economic way of teaching children and adults to sculpt.  There are several recipes for salt dough if you google it but I prefer to keep the ingredients to the bare minimum.

For my, every 4-Week- workshop, that I conduct, I always keep atleast half a class for salt dough molding and sculpturing. Salt dough can be easily mixed and very easily made.  You can coat a layer of modge podge and then paint it with acrylic paints. If you want it to last longer, and don’t want the paint to fade, I suggest giving it one more coat of modge podge.

Today, I am sharing with you a dozen ways in which you can use Salt Dough.

picFotor121590352

Salt Dough designs can be shaped either by cookie cutters or freely by modeling and sculpturing the dough.

picdscf2036

Oven baked salt dough designs come out, looking like this :-

pice4

1:  Bookmarks :-  A simple design can be hot glued to a tongue depressor and used as a bookmark !!! Doesn’t get easier than that !!

picDSCF2058

2 :  Fridge Magnets

picFotor121580813

3:  Ear rings :- A pair in the same shape with a tiny hole on one of the edges ~ attach a ear ring loop and you have a pair of inexpensive earing to go with every dress you own !!!

picFotor121574439

4:  Pendant The same can be done for a pendant as well.

picDSCF2082

5:  Hair clip :- Adding a hair clip to the base of a flower or heart shaped flat surfaced salt dough = hair clip. Ofcourse you can embellish your hair clip with pearls, glitter, beads etc.

picFotor121572614

6:  Christmas tree ornament :-  Come Christmas and most households encourage their kids making their own ornaments for the tree.

picDSCF2070

7:  Fancy Gift tags:- If you want to make a dramatic statement on the precious gifts you give away ~ why not top up the wrapping with a salt dough tag ??!

picDSCF2072

8:   Figurines for art and craft OR DIY toys. Keep a small blob for every child in birthday party and see them make silly and creative critters from it !

picdscf2053

9:   Plant markers

picDSCF2073

10:   Key Chain :- What a lovely mothers day or fathers day or teachers day gift !!

picFotor121573518

11:  Broach :- the same can be made in the above manner but with a round pin clip.

picFotor121572614

12  Embellishments for :-

  • decorating photoframes,
  • mixed media projects,
  • to dress naprings
  • even table cloth weights !!

picDSCF2049

I have shared more than 15 uses of salt dough but ofcourse there are many more ways to use it.  I hope you found some inspiration and would like to give it a try.

I am joining the following parties and sharing these ideas with them :-

Frame from recycled cardboard ~ Tutorial

Hi Friends ,

A lot of times, we rush out to the nearest stores in search of craft items we wish to use in a project. In some cases, it is a must, however in other cases, we can try and improvise with what we have at hand. Today, I am sharing with you how to make a frame out of a regular double layer corrugated cardboard. Ofcourse, I’m sure, there are others who may have thought this one out as well.

BeFunky_DSCF6008.jpg

I made this nearly 6 months back for my youngest sons’ room ~ He is an outgoing boy and his room has quite a dash of bright colors, hence I kept the tone very bright and cheerful colors. Since almost all my projects carry a load of recycled materials and also since I am such a firm believer in “waste not” ~ I have decided to leave a list at the end of my post stating the items which were recycled. Materials required :

  • Double layered corrugated cardboard
  • Hot glue gun / White wood glue
  • Blade or xcto blade
  • Cardstock to cover the frame
  • Embellishments include your choice of beads, buttons, cola caps, ribbons etc
  • If you like, you could distress the edges too with some distress ink.

Recycled :- Bottle cap,  patches of scrapbooking paper, buttons, cardboard !

DSCF1025

Roughly cut a square within the large square piece of cardboard with an sharp blade. Cutting a cardboard may seem relatively easy but you have to be very careful with the pressure and intensity with which you cut with one hand and the position of  the other hand.

 DSCF1028

Settle the cardboard on a large sheet of cardstock ~ I have used a handmade paper due to its strength and durability.

DSCF1029

Mark the center ( roughly) in the square ~ as already marked above and cut out four triangles.

 DSCF1031

Snip off the end of the triangles if its too long. Glue the ends on the backside of the frame. Cut off the corners of the other end of the paper and glue it backwards. The regular white glue or a hot glue gun can be used here.

DSCF1033

Once the papers are all glued the board ~ your frame is ready. After this, its really a matter of dressing up the frame for the party.

I’ve embellished the frame with a couple of pinwheels, the initial of my sons’  name, a bunting using scraps and a paper rosette. This project, totally uses up all your scrap and recycled materials ! Voila ! BeFunky_DSCF2127.jpg I could have given the frame a backing, but I preferred to let it remain empty so that the color from the background would let the shades on the bunting, pop even more.

BeFunky_DSCF2124.jpg

BeFunky_DSCF2126.jpg

BeFunky_DSCF2271.jpg

BeFunky_DSCF6010.jpg

Notice how the same frame shows up differently in 3 different backgrounds !  Mr E was super excieted to have something “MADE” all for himself. Being the youngest, he is quite accustomed to getting the hand-me-downs 🙂   Although, I did not finish it off with a matt modge podge, I am happy to report that its been over 6 months and all the embellishments look neat and tidy. So there you have it ! I am linking this post to the following parties :-

I’m curious, are all crafters like me, well how about the ones who visit me ?

  1. Do you like to recycle ?  Yes / No
  2. How often do you try to improvise rather than buy brand new stuff ?  Always / Never / sometimes
  3. Do you feel a sense of achievement when you have made something from complete waste ?  Yes / No
  4. Do you feel, sometimes you have gone overboard with collecting stuff to recycle ? Yes / No

For me that’s a ~ YES, ALWAYS, YES, YES  !!! So if you have a similar reply, you just won yourself a twin on the other side of the world !! Thank you for visiting me.   I would love to hear how you liked this ridiculously inexpensive frame ! Have a beautiful day and drive safely please ! 329847D06DC776810690945E262E8BDA
