National day crafts to make and decorate

December 2nd is the National Day of United Arab Emirates.

UAE is a diverse country.  It is the central hub for people to meet, work together and develop relationships. This country offers a sense of freedom, security and respect for all beliefs and cultures.

Expats as well as the locals live in perfect harmony here, hence the expats are equally excited and participate in the celebrations, with little children dressed in flag colors and balloons and stickers, badges and sweets being distributed.

From record gathering of flags to breathtaking phenomenal fireworks to fancy luxury cars embossed in national flag colors and bling .. we will be seeing it all !!

While the country is all set for the National day celebration with full pomp and show, I decided to teach my students how to decorate with regular household items to make lovely celebratory decoration and accessories.

We used regular plastic bottles and cut out the base in the shape of a flower. We later applied acrylic paints in the colors of red, green, black and white.  These were then tied up and hung as decoration.
Younger students made these simple trees with various shapes.  The theme centered around the colors used.
We also rolled up newspaper and made these large flowers to stick on the walls.
Work still in progress.
we made the flag out of paper chains.
We bought ribbons of the flag color and cut out “bangles” out of plastic bottle and wrapped it all around the plastic bottle – making a bangle with the flag colors.
We also used nail polish to color “washers” and tied it to these thin ribbons. The kids love accessorizing themselves with these.
How we decorated for National day.
These displayed handicrafts are a part of the UAE culture.  In the olden days, people relied on the resilient Palm tree to provide everything from shade to food to shelter material.  The branches of the palm tree were used to make these baskets, hand fans, bread serving dishes, food mats etc.
The red siting area is just recreated here to show how, in the olden days, they would preferably sit on these hard cushions which can still be found in most homes.
Actually they are quite comfortable.

We wanted to make several more items for the National Day, but felt, slightly limited since all our projects had to have recycled material usage as well as be decorative in nature.

How do you decorate your home, office or school for your National day ?  Do you get your kids involved in the decoration ?

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked these easy and fun creations.

Banner/Bunting

C R E A T E Bunting.

I know, my period of absence has been a long one and for good reason too.  A trip to Istanbul ~ Turkey, followed immediately by the onset of Ramadhan. For those of you, who are wondering whats Ramadhan. Muslims follow the lunar calender and the months are named like Moharram, shaabaan, ramadhan, shawwal etc. Ramadhan being the most holiest of them all for various reasons. I will be doing an entire feature on Ramadhan, 3 posts from now, so you have a better idea about it.

Well, anyways being occupied in cleansing the soul and working on self improvement also meant that , “Doodle Buddies” has been a wee bit neglected.

Without going about much into the tutorial or preparation of this banner, I’d like to share this bunting, that I had made for the craft show. It was hung on one of the display racks that exhibited stencils, stickers, etc which are used to create projects ~ hence the title : CREATE.

To follow just how I made this bunting, please click here.    The only added element are the tiny silver bells at the end of the triangles. This is thick handmade paper from India. The ribbon is yellow with blue and white snowflakes scattered on it.

Here is the Bunting :-

Tutorial for making a bunting/banner.

Hi friends, I’m back after that amazing craft show that I hosted at my house.  This was not the first time I hosted a craft show, but each episode teaches us something new, something we thought we had covered but only realized that it could have been made better. I have broken down the craft show into various pieces ~ and today I am covering some thing about the “decoration” aspect. How I made the main bunting for the show which was almost the only decoration I had hung ! But with all the eye candy around, who would need more color ?

Here is a step by step photo tutorial of how I made the bunting. Well, I started with a yard of netted wrapping paper which I got for less than dhs 10 at the Day to Day store. ( “our” version of the dollar store or 1 pound store ) and the rest is in the pictures. You can either use printed paper and add plain alphabets to it or vice versa, plain sheet of paper with printed alphabets. Both look equally stunning. All you really need is some paper, a ribbon or cord, a stiff paper (the red paper on the border) and a eyelet setter or a cropadile (which I have used) and eyelets ofcourse. It is really very very simple and adds such a charm over any area or wall. I hope you are inspired to give it a go.
