Upcycle A Broken Mirror

” Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !! “

Some of my favorite words are, create, creativity, craft, upcycle and repurpose !          What are yours ?

UPCYCLE THE MIRROR TO DISPLAY JEWELRY (1)

Like I explained in my previous post, I have been designing jewelry.   We held two trunk shows, and I found that we were short of display units for my leather jewelry collection.

Alittle scavenging into our shed, and my trusted wingman was back with a full size narrow mirror that we had dumped in there, a few years back !!  I bet your asking why I stored a broken mirror stand, right ?  My husband asks that ALL THE TIME !!!  I’ll give you the reply, I give him – We’ll find a use for it someday. (not that he ever believes me 🙂 )  But for once – THAT DAY, finally came !!

Obviously, the stand looked worn out but I decided, to keep the shabby chic distress look on the white border, but paint the cork board, within.

The diehard optimist in me, only noticed that the wood was sturdy and the size was perfect to hold as many as 40 pairs of earings !!

A couple of coats of paint should do the trick.

I  mixed some white acrylic to a pastel shade of peach and pink to get this color.

A dozen or so nails on the side to hang the strings at and voila ! We have a display unit to hang our jewelry – from TRASH !!!

Absolutely in love with this  piece !! Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !!!! 🙂

DIY Jewelry display stands

Hello friends. How have you been ?

DIY JEWELRY STAND

I’m delighted to share with you guys a new development –  I have been designing handmade statement jewelry !!!   What a leap – in terms of creativity, atleast !!!

Please drop me a like at https://www.instagram.com/madelineposh/

We held a trunk show at The Villa a few months back; the details of which will be in an upcoming post.  One of the things, that I realized is that most of my necklaces were long and most of the display stands, I had, were short display units for the table stands.  Hence, I improvised.

I bought some white foam sheet and designed a display stand – however, quickly I realized that the stand was not large enough, inorder to allow my neck pieces to hang freely.

Also, it meant that I would need to make atleast 70 of these boards ! Plan A did not work out.

Plan B –  I’ve stored several bulletin boards (cork ones) in the shed. Time to make use of them.

I decided that these bulletin boards would be ideal since they could carry multiple strands and would be sturdy as well. However alittle prepping was in order. Here are some photos explaining what I’ve done.

A couple of coats of paint, and we’ll be ready in no time.

One of these boards had a large hole in it. I decided that for this one, we would place some dark blue, thin fabric over it, so as to hide the damage.  It worked so well coz we did not even have to glue or staple it – the push pin did the job !!!

Tip – Cork soaks up alot of paint.  The final coat is drying here.

I spray painted these push-pins to a dark shade of grey/black. These would be the hooks on my display board.

VOILA !!!

I love the look and how perfectly, everything fit in.

These are easy to store and very convenient to carry around too.

The length of the boards, helps to bring out the flow and drop of the necklaces.

Its a win win situation for me.

I love upcycling and I love to repurpose mundane objects.  How about you ? What was your last upcycle project ?

I am sharing this post with all my blog friends here.

DIY Family Organization Board Tutorial.

Dressing up mundane objects with a little color, some craft paper, few embellishments and alittle TLC gives me a lot of creative satisfaction. Ordinarily we tend to throw a lot of packing material, pieces of fabric, and even things that can be easily recycled. But not me 🙂  A large part of the “junk” is cleaned/washed and stored for future projects and ideas. {and then hubby and I quarrel about the amount of “junk” being stacked up in the shed !! ~ sounds familiar ?}

Jokes apart ~ Its one of those things that I so wish to educate kids about. A little change can go a long way in saving the state Mother Earth is in 😦

This project is totally, an upcycle freak’s dream ~ Everything is recycled in this project ! I made this board a couple of days back when felt the need of an organizational board to keep track of some of the engagements, meals, doctors appointments and reminders for the week ahead.

I didn’t need something fancy ~ just something simple and reliable. I dived into my backyard wood stock and came across this thin sheet of cork wood. It seemed to be perfect. Alittle sanding here and there and it was ready for being dressed.

I’ve always been a sucker for polka dots and I had just the perfect, bright and happy design paper for the background.

I needed a couple of containers to hold pencils, pins, rubberbands etc ~ I reused milk cartons and some laban cartons to do the job.

DSCF2018

With a little spray paint ~ they really perked up. For a more aesthetic look, I added some scraps of the polka dot cardstock and finished off the look with a few tiny clothespin. Has made an immense difference, isn’t it ??

DSCF2058

Next a few clothespin were modge podged with co-ordinating stripes pattern.

DSCF2060

I also placed one old cork coaster for pinning school circulars or reminders.

DSCF2059

I had this title printed off my printer with some fancy font and layered it over a nice textured bright orange handmade paper.

DSCF2061

Assembling the whole board was really quite easy.  Naturally the title went on top while the rest just fell into the place that could leave enough space to pin things, clip things and hold stuff in the containers.  They were all modge podged ( the word is a verb too !!! ) except for the cork coaster and the milk cartons. For those, I decided to use E6000.

Btw ~ do you know that you do get the duplicate of E6000 ? Trust ‘reliable’ China to come up with ANYTHING duplicate. Its E600 and the tube looks almost exactly similar to the original.

Once everything had dried ~ I modge podged over the board along with everything (embellishments ) again. That gave it a really nice and more professional finish.

DSCF2045

And Voila !!!! Two holes were made on the top of the board {goof up :- those holes would look a lot better and less chipped, had I drilled them instead of hammering them } so as to hang it with a cord.

This project took nearly 2 – 3 hours including drying time. And all the materials are recycled so you don’t really have to buy any of the tools or materials. Its readily available in almost all homes.

Do you have an organization board at home ? Would you like to share the picture with me  ?

Islamic poster for year 5

Brotherhood in Islam, was the topic for the poster, manu had to make. I gave him a printed copy of the various hadiths pertaining to this topic and asked him to make a verbal presentation of it.

Manu being manu ~ he is always in a hurry to get things finished, so that he informed me about this project the very day, the task was given out ~ and we had nearly 5 days before submission !!! He wanted to help as much so he could feel like it belonged to him 🙂

We decided to give it the look of a garden, with flowers speaking the hadiths (things said or done or approved by prophet Mohammed sas. We used bright happy colors and sadly, I did not have a large poster in white so we went with what was in hand, brown. Luckily the contrast of bright colors against brown was stunning !! The cloud shapes were used for larger hadiths, while the flowers were used for Quran quotes and one liners quotes. Manu is a perfectionist. He can take a long time just to write a paragraph becoz he wants all his letters to be placed properly and all the work looking neat and tidy. That can quite a challenge for a restless mom like me. Hence all the writing work was done by yours truly.

Since there were so many flowers, Manu did the cutting and I guided him with where it had to be pasted. In just two days, the poster was ready for presentation !! Although, Manu was not still ready with his oral presentation !! So we waited till he was prepared and then he handed the poster to his Islamic teacher and gave an oral presentation. Needless to say, he felt he was on cloud 9 !!! All his friends were talking about it and his teacher actually approached me, at the following PTA meeting to thank me for encouraging him and making the poster.

A happy manu makes a happy mama !!
