Carrefour Promotional Prices !! Hoax or Coax ?

Virtually every time, I have visited Carrefour, I have had a dilemma to deal with ~ to buy or not to buy !!! 2 weeks back they were running a “dhs 5” promotion isle and although, this was meant to be an emergency visit to pick some washing powder and croissants, I landed up “browsing” thru this lovely colorful posters with dhs 5 displayed all over !! Before long, I was already shortlisting what I thought would be needed and what I could, perhaps, use at some later imaginery stage – of course you already know what THAT means !! Yes, that counter which is created just for the frugal likes of me, ready to display some delicious DIY and other haberdashery items. Ofcourse, I did not dive into the scam. I “tried” swimming thru it ~ while getting caught in just a few nets and traps. In the end, I came home with a “FEW” out-of-the-list items. I promised, myself, I would use these useful items at the earliest and I am holding onto that promise.

I love the clipboard with the coffee mug printed on it ! That, I have already put to use.
The “Shoes off sign, I love, and it is going on the main door. (Yes, for western folks, we dont appreciate someone walking into a spotless house with muck and stuff on their shoes – a cultural thing.
The staedtler pens ~ I absolutely love, writing and playing with striking colors rather than the boring black, blue and red. so there, now there’s plenty of colors to add some spark on my doodles.
Yes, ofcourse that kit with the hooks and frame holds etc is something, I already own. Well, maybe I own alittle more than 5 such pieces, but who doesnt know, just how handy they can be !!!
Pruning scissors ~ ofcourse, who owns a garden and doesnt have one. I did’nt and now I do. (so justified)
Glue sticks for the glue gun – I may have half a dozen packets of those, but who can blame me for picking just a couple more. Afterall I do use the glue gun a whole lot of the time.
The paint sponges ~ sometimes these things just disappear from the shelves in stores and when they do reappear, they are at a very high price so I grabbed some while they were at a great price.
The green wire cord was something, I dont exactly have a use for right now, but wont be long before I get my EUREKA moment ūüôā

I bet, you can guess, just a few more wise uses for my new impulsive buys !!

Sharpies Markers in Dubai.

Is it just me or does no one know where to buy Sharpies markers in Dubai !!!

I googled it, and came up with a few folks, who have claimed that you could find them at certain hypermarkets. I have nearly half a dozen projects lined up for these markers so I started my own little hunt for these markers which quite as much spiraled into a HUGE MISSION !! Here are the places that disappointed me so :-

Carrefour hypermarkets ( Mall of Emirates as well as Mirdiff City Center )
Spinneys (Mercato and Al wasl road )
Choitrams
Geant in Ibn Batuta
Hyper Panda in Festival city
Magrudys in Deira City Center
Virgin in Dubai Mall
Hamleys in Dubai Mall
Book World in Dubai Mall
Dubai Library distribution ( Sheikh Zayed Road)
Ace Hardware ( you do get various markers there occasionally)
Farooq stationery ( Al Mamzar )

Now THAT is a HUGE search for these markers and I really doubt there are any more stores left for me to check out !!!! It is really surprising how such versatile markers are no where to be found in Dubai !!!

But ofcourse, if I have missed any reputed bookstore or stationery store, where you have bumped into them, please do let me know. For now, I have had to request my cousin to pop some over from UK !!

So yeah, my search turns up Zilch !! So dear crafters, creative folks and sharpies fans, Sharpies Markers are NO WHERE in Dubai !!!

Correction !!!

The following three Blog friends have confirmed that they HAVE bought Sharpies from Dubai :-

Nyla bought sharpies from WHsmith in The Dubai Mall

Areej bought sharpies from Paper chase at Dubai Mall

Nuweera bought sharpies from Art shop (first floor) at Beach Center (Jumeirah Road)

So the new verdict is that Sharpies are available in Dubai at the above locations !!

UPDATE ON 2nd Feb – 2015

Something inbetween

Re-emerging in 2013.

Hello Friends !!! Remember me ? Yes, thats right ~Naush ~ the creative mom in Dubai, who had dropped off the face of the earth and you were wondering ~ what happens to the blogs of dead people !!!! Well I am NOT dead and I HAVE re-emerged !!!!!

My last post was somewhere in November and thats when I had just started the process of packing my ENTIRE house ~ yes, I mean ” A HUGE ENTIRE ” ~ an entire house load worth “14 TRUCKS” and finally we graced our new home amidst cartons and wrapping papers and bubble wraps. It took 5 days, 14 trucks and 9 guys working from 7am to ¬†8pm just to pack the house and arrive at our new home.Fotor041132322final2

I must say at this point, we are absolutely pleased with our choice of the Packers and Movers that we hired. These guys were really focused and fast !!  Out of nearly 400+ cartons, only 1 plate was damaged. Ofcourse, I worked round the clock with the guys, giving them instructions and guidance as to where things had to be placed etc. For the first 5 days, we all worked tirelessly. And in the end, it paid off, ofcourse.

We had been living at the Arabian Ranches for 7 years and have loved every moment over there. Some of my best memories were made there. My boys saw there first decade in that beautiful home. We loved the¬†comfortable, quiet and convenient lifestyle ~ good neighbours, great friends,¬†excellent security, luxurious sourrounding,¬†best eateries in town, a¬†remarkable golf course, even more remarkable equestarian club¬†~ the pool at our feet !! What more can you ask for, isnt it ?? Well, the answer is “more space”¬†~ With growing age and heights and waists, we decided “change” had to come. Alhamduallah, we moved to Al warqaa on 16th December and four months later, I still find myself, organizing stuff, opening cartons (yes, there are still a dozen of them left for unpacking, but none that are of any daily purpose) and “still finding space” !!

Fotor0411201854

Fotor0411200554

I cannot believe just how demanding the first two months of the year were. Long before the scissors found their way on the cartons, I was all but completly overwhelmed¬†with the curtain rails fixing, buying nearly 6 wardrobes and¬†having custom made¬†beds¬†!! Not to mention that, I had to advertise and have Al Reem villa on rent ~ so there was a real load on my shoulder ~ rather a mountain sitting hard on me ūüė¶¬† Alhamduallah Allah swt¬†blessed me with great stamina and strength and somehow I¬†managed to rise to the occasion. It was virtually impossible to stay focussed had it not been for my big blue book of lists. Every morning, I jotted down what everyone’s and my, task would be, and it gave me a great deal of satisfaction, ticking the “done” jobs.

Also, One of the best things that happened was that we found a great handyman ~ Mohammed. Allah works in mysterious ways. Mohammed was a great help in installing¬†the additional curtains, fixing the new beds, and hanging the 5000 shelves, frames and “stuff” on the walls. (exaggeration ofcourse !!)

As always, the boys were absolutely amazing helpers. They tolerated mama’s eratic moods and yells and impatience with a “huge” pinch of salt. Not once did I ever hear anyone complain. Infact we had Etisalat (our local telecommunication ) installed only by the end of January, so that the boys were not distracted by tv or internet activities. Cruel mama, aint I ??

The cats adjusted well. Keiki, my 7 year old was very distressed when we came here and decided she would just turn her back to us, sitting very sad under the basin in the guest bathroom. She sat there for nearly a day. Pepper was slightly apprehensive but less hasseled. I realized, luckily for us, he was not as attached to his territory as he was to us. Having US around is all he wanted. After a week of being in the house, we gradually introduced the cats to the outside sourrounding but made sure, they did not leave the immediate premises. One tip that I tried was spreading some of his litter tray granules all around the boundary of the bunglow. That way, I was hoping other cats would stay away and if any of these two were to cross the boundary, they would find their scent back home. It worked like a charm.

We desperately missed feeding the birds and to our surprise, becoz Mushrif park is just at a stones throw, there are swarms of birds that visit us and that too, “RIGHT INFRONT OF OUR HOUSE ” ~ I mean, what were the chances of that happening ?!!! ~ and it IS happening. Sam is absolutely overjoyed.

My kitchen is a DREAM ! But a woman can never have enough space, now can she ???¬†¬†I have been really enjoying every minute of the last 4 months !! We had a fantastic winter this year ~ much of which has already bid us farewell.¬† I managed to get all my 92 pots of plants here and they have survived very well under my care. (I’m yet to source a reliable gardener)

The boys are overwhelmed to have master bedrooms each ! Its truly beyond a dream for them and me too.  The bunglow is sourrounded by a huge courtyard on all four sides and only once, I complete my interior works, am I, going to start with working on the four yards. So as of right now, they are a mix of interlock pavement and very very large inviting sand pits.

This is it, for now, I will however, post some pictures of my new seasonal flowers in my next post. Till then, good bye and thank you for visiting me today.

No sentiment card, Something inbetween

The elegant card.

This is the third card in the card making kit series. Since I had to use the sketch, there was little scope for adding any dimension apart from what was provided. Hence it has plenty of pretty flowers and an intricate polka dotted butterfly.

I know, its very unlike me to keep a plain background but I prefered to keep a plain backdrop and fill color and design with the DP provided rather than keep a designed background and plain colored flowers and swirls.  All said and done, I think, this card is the highlight of the series.

Hope to read your thoughts on this card.

I wish to enter this card in the following card challenges :-

Hoarding Ikea !

As an ardent crafter, one of my favorite places to shop for storage, furniture for the studio (or house) or even fabric, has always been Ikea. Everything about their concepts, design, simplicity and sophistication, fascinates me ~ as does half of Dubai !!¬† ūüôā

When Bilal was just a baby, I would take him in his stroller over to Ikea, which was then, in Deira City Center. I remember spending longer time in the coffee shop in the premises than shopping !  Loved their selection of meals and their coffee too. You know, suddenly, I just realized, this sounds like a promotional script for Ikea ~ Ok I promise ~ I havent been paid by them for reminiscing my beautiful memories !

Why dont I just return to 2012 !! Well, with more work order comes more mess naturally ~¬† and what does Naush do ???¬† Storage boxes/buckets/baskets etc ofcourse !¬† I couldnt have picked a better time ! I just know fate was favoring me or maybe hinting at me ūüôā¬†¬† You’ll never believe what I landed up with !¬† A huge load of these white, black,¬†orange¬†and green boxes had just arrived in the ”¬†as-is ”¬†section.¬† Naturally I took a deep dive and stacked as many I could on two trolleys. Hey, lets just face it, a mom and a crafter can never have too many storage boxes, right ??

Its been 3 weeks, all the boxes have found homes on the different shelves very systematically however, surprisingly, none of them have become homes to any of my crafting goodies ! Yes, I know what your thinking ūüôā

A hoarder ! I think, there is a genetic connection between artists and mess. No matter how hard I try, my studio can remain pretty and presentable only for like a week and then, it breaks down again. I know, alot of you face the same predicament.

Truth be said, I¬†think, I have a super large job ahead of me in cleaning, organizing and maybe even refurbishing the studio and perhaps thats why I dont want to open the pandora’s box just as yet.¬†¬†

I do hope to fill these beautiful storage boxes and maybe even alter them alittle bit but for now, they are still waiting.

Here are my precious boxes.

In the newspapers !

One of the many things great about living in a community is the ‚Äúfeeling‚ÄĚ of belonging, of being a part of the community. One of our proactive residents at the Ranches, has started a blog directory for all the business women in Arabian Ranches. She‚Äôs been very enthusiastic and worked very hard to get everyone involved in providing services or exhibiting their talents, into this directory. What an innovative idea… isn’t it ?

There are few women, who are involved in fashion wear, or accessories, party organizing, jewellry, gifts and handmade stuff. It is, now, so convenient to know exactly, who is planning what event, rather than having to go two highways away to pick a special gift ! We now have the information right under our nose and thats just brilliant. Its always that one person who is ready to carry the baton, claim the baton and in this case, pick the baton, that makes all the difference. And for the Ranches, its Clemintina.

Two weeks back, we were interviewed by Express times of Gulf news and finally, the feature appeared in last Thursday’s newspaper. Its such a delight ! I suppose there are several ways of being featured in the Newspaper, unfortunetly one of the many being, in the obituary or having done some thing obsene like straus kahn. But I’m glad in my lifetime, I was fortunate enough to be interviewed by City 7 for a 15 minutes programe and now, I got a chance to have my mug in the newspaper and all for good reasons !!! Alhamduallah.

Please visit this link, to read what we had to say, here.

Thank you for visiting me today. So glad you dropped by.
