6th fair in Dubai.

Our last fair participation was at Uptown Mirdiff. It was a relatively small fair, mainly for the community. But it was well organized.  Being so close to Al Warqa, we were nearly in our comfort zone 🙂

With every new fair, something new is learnt and some improvements are made. You tend to learn to be better prepared.

Here are some of the pictures of the set up.

Upcyle Pallets to Sign Boards.

Hello friends !  Since the majority of my visitors are from USA, I hope you guys are enjoying the spring. Bet all your soil beds are ready and the herbs planted already.

Today, I’m sharing a few sign boards, I made, from pallets.

I have a brand-spanking-new silhouette machine which has found its way out of the box and 8months later, I am still no closer to using it than I was, the first time, I pulled it out of its carton 😦      Any guidance, inspiration or ‘push’ will be highly appreciated 🙂

I have free-handed the writing. It was rather difficult becoz I wrote with the sharpies and the wood was not smooth. I cant say, I’m very pleased with them but I liked the ” herb garden” quite a lot.

Where do you buy craft supplies from, in Dubai ?

Dear Friends, Kindly visit the updated and current post for all the art and craft supplies stores in Dubai, here :-

This is one of the most asked questions I receive in my blog. There are several other places too which I will address in another post.

The whole point of this post is to share information of

  • where you can buy craft supplies,
  • what kind of supplies can be bought from which stores
  • what uses can certain products adapt to.

Let me clarify one thing in the very beginning of this post ~ I am NOT a hoarder.

Ok, so now that we have THAT out of the way, let me explain, that over the past 3 months, while the house was frequented by a regular stream of visitors, I still managed to utilize some of the shopping time with them to pick a few craft goodies for myself too.

Carrefour at Mall Of the Emirates.

Now, I know, your probably looking for specific stuff – but let me tell you, one of the things that I like best about Carrefour, is that :-

  • They pick commodities in huge quantities = which naturally means a good price for the consumer.
  • They have these special sales of 10 and 20 dhs prices, ( once or twice a year) on household/domestic purpose items which come in handy for us crafters.
  • Buy Christmas ornaments after New Years ! Why you ask ?  Prices ofcourse !!

There are many such things that are helpful and available at Carrefour – Do you have them ?

  • The twine is excellent and, I’ve realized at times, when your looking for them ~ you cant find them.
  • The freezer tape is going to be a great help, for my students, in the next art class.

Christmas Ornaments from Carrefour

While we are Muslims and do not celebrate Christmas, I generally pick scores and scores of Christmas ornaments during the Christmas season. Why ?

  • They come in handy, in several ways :-
  • I can use them as templates and stencils.
  • I can also teach my students how to make them, hence they are inspirational pieces.
  • Some can be used as napkin rings.
  • Some as curtain decoration or tie backs.
  • Some as fridge magnets.
  • Some as book marks.
  • some as toys for the pets (cats)
  • While one sees ornaments here ~ I see endless creative possibilities 🙂

The next time your at Carrefour at Christmas time, think about the above possibilities while looking around for those ornaments.

Daiso is a Japanese retailer who have been in the market selling Japanese products for over a decade now.  They host stores in Ajman, Dubai ~ Mirdiff City Center, Lamcy Plaza and else where.  You may have to look them up for a location closer to where you stay.

I love the store in Ajman coz they are probably the largest with a larger variety. Their prices were very reasonable, as in Dhs 5 for most products. However over the years they have raised it to dhs 7 for most items.

The below items were bought from Daiso.

  • The hair filter can act as a stencil and with the excellent texture ~ it could be used in several other ways too.
  • Ikea has a similar curtain clip too but without the loop.
  • These files are hard to find. They are designed for smaller objects and I know exactly which wooden pieces are going to have smooth corners and surfaces now !!

Brands for less ( in Bur Dubai )

Yes, I know, your surprised ! I was too !  On one shopping trip with my relatives, while they shopped for clothes, I turned to the stationery shelves and was delighted to come across these lovely finds.  Who would have thought that Brands for Less would carry these items too !

  • The circular cutter for only dhs 22 !!! ( My old one is Fiskars, for which I paid a fortune nearly 10 years back )
  • These cones/blue cups are stands for keeping a painted item on it, so as to dry. (Needless to say, I already have different plans for them )

  • These two precision cutters are great too. I would use them only for fine tuning if my dies missed out some tiny corners.
  • For the price I paid, I was jumping in joy ! (well not literally )

Dubai Library Distribution :-

I have been visiting them on Sheikh Zayed Road branch and Murraqabat road branch for alittle over 7 years now and I must tell you, they’ve never  disappointed.

  • My manual paper cutter/the guillotine is also bought from there.
  • They have a large stock of paints and professional artist products too. (paint brushes, easels, frames, paints, varnishes, mediums, watercolors etc)
  • The below shopping was done when I wanted some specific acrylic paint colors, gesso and some stencils. Naturally everything else that you see is just an add-on 🙂  (still not a hoarder)
  • I had shopped at their Al Warqa outlet and was slightly disappointed that they did not carry paint brands Folkart or American Crafts.
  • They are not inexpensive but then professional art materials are seldom inexpensive.
  • I haven’t seen these water color pencils elsewhere, so if your looking for any, you know where to find them now 🙂

  • The medium gel is great to seal art works.
  • The plastic spatulas may not have been my best buy ~ I wish they had the steel ones.
  • Oh and btw the blue pen writes like a dream ! I wish, I’d bought more. (perhaps another time !)

Creative Minds

Another store that Samie, had asked me visit nearly 3 months back was Creative Minds at Al Barsha. (Umm suqeim road)

On our way back from Jumeirah, we decided to pop over for a “short” visit to this store and I was totally taken aback, once I entered the doors !

Now this is what you call a crafters paradise. I don’t think, I could emphasis just how huge the store is, how well organized and  well-kept their creative tools, supplies and variety is, so its surely a “must-visit” stop for any scrapbooker, crafter, hobbyist !! They have EVERYTHING you can dream of and more !!

Nearly 10 years back when there were merely a handful of stores that carried specific products like rubber stamps for school teachers or charts for school, this store at the Beach center (ground floor) used to carry them. I think, they were called Al wasit trading then. They were quite expensive but the owner had once told me that they bought all their goods from USA directly hence it was that expensive.

I am happy to say, that the owner has opened another store which is Creative Minds !

They have a huge collection of Sharpies too.

The only draw back I noticed, are the prices. I feel, they are quite expensive but I suppose if money is not an issue, then this is one shop that has every hobbyist’s dream tools under one roof.

Although, I had just bought myself a huge load of goodies from DLD just a week back, wouldn’t it seem rather rude, leaving without any purchases, at all ?

Oh of course it would, so I picked only a few paints, stencils, and sharpies (can never have enough of them).

Sharjah ~ Bank street

  • There are several problems associated with visiting and shopping at Sharjah city or outskirts.
  • Travelling the distance
  • Parking chaos
  • Haggling with the storekeeper
  • Most stores are wholesalers and don’t even want to entertain retail-customers.
  • Most of these stores are haberdashery so in essence they cater to the needs of tailors, people related to the textile field etc and not crafters.

I bought these ribbons and the jute ribbon from Sharjah behind Bank street ~ where most textile and tailoring stores are located. But sometimes it just feels, like its too much of an effort for something too small 😦

And Finally this huge treasure of beads, buttons, bows, embellishments was bought from the Malaysia !! How cool is that !

Yippee ~ Well you can just say, it was my New Year gift 🙂  Afterall, a girl can only have so many buttons, ribbons and embellishments – isn’t it 🙂

DSCF6064 DSCF6065

Voila !! There you have it. Some stores, you probably were aware of and some, you may want to visit in the near future.

oh yeah, I would like to clarify that this post has NOT been sponsored by any one of the above mentioned stores ~ and I have not been offered any discounts or reductions on the goods I purchased from them in lieu for this post.

This post is for all my fellow crafters who are creative and are looking for the right direction and some guidance. If you found this information helpful, I would love to have your feedback. Kindly join me or subscribe to my blog using any of the following social networks :

Thank you very much for visiting me today. Have a beautiful day and be safe.

Family Holidays in Dubai !!

Hello friends !!! Yes, its me and I’m still alive !!

The past 2 months have been so chaotic, to say the least. One word comes to mind immediately “VISITORS” !!!  Its been a period full of in-house visitors from various countries and a special visit from my parents too.  It was fun and stressful at the same time. In December we had 17 guests at a time  and that was something !!   My sister-in-law also joined us with her family from Saudi Arabia and we really had a blast in the kitchen, preparing large meals and fighting away like cats and dogs !! Being of the same age, we’ve always been like pals rather than relations and it was really one looooong party, to say the least 🙂

Yes, thats quite a huge bunch of us, isn’t it !!

All the kids !

That’s my SIL right next to me, in the mixed print scarf.

and these photos don’t even include the men in the family !!

Dad and Mom stayed with us for nearly a month ~ and I cant begin to tell you how they pampered me with amazing “mom-cooked meals” !!  Mom loves to cook and she tends to forget all her ailments once she starts her chopping and slicing bit !! The fridge magically got stacked with sweet chutneys and green chutneys and achaars and what not !! Most people from Bombay are suckers for the hot and tangy street food called chaats and no one makes them better than mummy. We feasted so many times on these in the past couple of weeks !! Its called Sev Puri.

Whatever little creative genes, I possess, comes from my super creative dad and so, I took complete advantage of having daddy home. I got to fulfill my long time dream of wood working with Daddy. I’ve always been a bit weary of using the drill machine but when he taught me the ropes, I took to it, like a fish to water. I am happy to report that not only have I gained confidence but I can now, differentiate between which screws would fit which drill bit holes and the fishers too !! And for a layman like me, I think, its a great achievement.

Dad was impressed with all the projects, I had created before he came. He probably never expected me to work on wood and it must have him baffled !! Daddy, is a brilliant craftsman but he’s not a patient teacher so one has to really slice and dump their ego before standing and understanding what he needs , what he’s saying and what he means.

Here are just some of the photos showing Daddy working away happily in my backyard wood workshop.

Dads painting one of my wall shelves with a coat of white.

As you can see in the background, we have heaps of logs and planks, Dad is preparing one such plank so as to convert it into a shelf.

Dad’s fixing this really difficult joint of one of my wheel carts, placed in the garden.

We’re working on a center shelf with some scrap wood, for my craft studio

We finally bought the sail shade from Ace Hardware and dad and the whole family contributed, into fixing it for the kitchen garden.

Lots of picnics, meals, horse races and out-of-station visits followed !! Its been a maddening month but one which we all will remember for years to come !

My best friend Judy and her husband David were also visiting Dubai and probably the only time I really miss living at the Ranches is when she is around. We were  practically inseparable while I stayed at the Ranches 😦  She is a huge blessing in our lives and its not very often that I turn to anyone’s advise, like I turn to her.

What a fun day was had at Judy’s place at the Ranches.

That’s my best friend, Judy and David with Mom and Dad.

So yeah ! There you have it !! With so much happening between family, friends and relatives, the blog was bound to be neglected.  Inspite of that, I have heaps of projects ready and waiting to be posted.

Thank you for visiting me today. I hope you drop by again.

Breast Cancer ribbons tutorial

Hello friends.

Two things went very wrong last month which has been the leading cause for my absence from my blog home 😦

I learnt my lesson the hard way that One has to be extra careful with any electronic gadgets/equipment in any overseas trip ~ which ofcourse, I wasn’t ! And I paid the price ~ or rather, am still paying the price for it.

Downloading tom tom on my laptop has lead it to act very weird ~ my internet connection as well as usb connectors have to be reconfigured ! Sheesh !! As if that was not bad enough, my camera, (due to a humpty dumpt fall ) has now got a tiny scratch on the lens, and the battery cage has gotten so loose that that the battery flips out easily !!  Being a slave to the keyboard of my own laptop and clarity & focal strength of my own camera, I refuse to use the boys’ laptop or camera :((   Not the most ideal situation to be in, for a creative blogger :((((((

Frustrating as it is, I have managed to turn around this situation to my favor, and made last month a truly gratifying one.  How ? I have indulged in over a dozen projects !!!!!  Super fun ~ super refreshing ~ super colorful ~ super recycling stuff !!!   Sometimes, I just have to take one step away from the keyboard and one step towards my work station to do what I LOVE the most ~ creating.

A little over 17 projects are waiting in queue to be shared here but I will start today with the most simplest of them.  Buddy’s school had a breast cancer event and he wanted to give some bows to some special teachers and friends.  If you know, Buddy, then you know that most of his “notifications” to me, generally land up at the 11th hour ~ so too with this event.

Luckily enough, I had all the basic material for this project at hand, so it was just within a matter of half an hour, that the entire presentation was ready !!

Really, its that simple.

Materials :

  • Scissors
  • Pink ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • tiny jewel/stud/bling
  • a pin/safety pin or any clip to attach the ribbon to the shirt. You could also use tiny magnets.
  • For packaging,
  • scraps of cardstock. (Didn’t I tell you how much I looooove to recycle !)
  • pinking sheers
  • a cd envelope/case

Cut a 2 inch ribbon diagonally and simply give it a loose twist meeting midway length. Join them with a dot of hot glue using the hot glue gun.

Using the hot glue gun, embellish the meeting point with jewels/bling etc

Next hot glue the pins to the back of the bow, in such a way that the pin is not seen from upfront.

Take a small scrap cardstock, cut the edges using a pinking sheer ~  punch two tiny holes with the cropadile, just like in the picture below.

Insert the pins into the holes and voila ~ Your ready with the bows !!

I have used this Pink CD cover to gift wrap them.

Such a simple gift but I had Buddy’s friends and teachers leave me messages of appreciation !

Ofcourse, you must have noticed the picture quality is pretty poor and far from doing justice to the “REAL” color and presentation.  But for now, and till the time my dotting camera is fixed, this’ll have to do 😦

I hope you liked this simple tutorial. I am sharing this tutorial with the following parties.

England, Overseas Trips, Uncategorized

London ~ street performers.

Hello friends ~ Like I promised in my previous post, I am continuing my “pictorial story” about our English holidays this past August.

We visited Central London only a couple of times, which still did not seem enough time to admire the amazing museums, parks, changing of guards etc. One thing that made the entire package even more enjoying was the amazing street performers which were present from Trafalgar square right upto the park adjacent the London Eye.

Each one of them were dressed in cartoonish or period costumes with face makeup et all, had some form talent (except the Halloween mask guy ) and would enact the role to the T.  They did not ask for money and were very civilized. I just kept admiring the bloke who  was sitting and looked like he just came out of coal mine. What brilliant make up !! Also the  guy in the silver costume ! And the other silver military guy would perform a slow-motion break dance !

Naturally this is all to unusual for us here in the Middle-East or in other parts of Asia  as well.  The only armies of performers one witnesses in the Asian countries, sadly are the, beggars, who line up in masses right from the airport terminal to the traffic lights to any of the tourist spots. That does leave a sour taste in the mouths of the average traveler what like having to constantly hush them away and if you pay one then a dozen of them reach for your purse.  But its all a part of the Asian itenary !

I am sharing a few of the images with you ~ I am certain you will find them fascinating.

Muslim pilgrimage ~ Umrah in Mecca.

About our recent Umrah Trip to Saudi Arabia !

A Creative Mom in Dubai

salam Alaikum dear brothers and sisters in Deen and hello friends,

We returned from our lovely Umrah ( muslim pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia) trip just a couple of days back and I’m almost just, rested enough, unpacked enough and awoken enough to pen about my fantastic trip to Mecca.

We stayed a couple of Days in Mecca and then hired a taxi to drive us to Medina, where we stayed for a couple of days, again.

We have been performing an umrah, every year for the past 4-5 years and its always even more exceptional than the year before. The feeling that one experiences, just standing infront of the Haram (kaaba) is like nothing comparable. You dont SEE God but like someone once said,  “You are guests of Allah swt and you already feel it.” How beautifully said.

Preparations :- If any of you are interested in performing Umrah, I…

Back from blog hibernation.

Hello friends.

I’m so glad to be back. I know, Doodle Buddies has been MIA here but I assure you, its for good reason infact several reasons.

I havent been able to be as consistent in my posts, as I would want to be for various reasons. Some of which are that, towards the begining of this year, I had joined a very elite company in designing greeting cards for them. The order being as large as it was, took nearly a couple of months before all of them were submitted. These here are not even 1/10th of the actual production !!

The summer holidays came and went …. and its unbelievable how quickly that time flew by !!! Between the blessed month of Ramadhan and house hunting ~ we barely had time to prepare for the mammoth task ahead of me. Whats that ? you ask … … … what comes after house hunting and before moving !!! Naturally packing. Inspite of nothing being finalized yet on the house front, I am already ” trying so very hard ” to just pack my studio and three weeks and 22 cartons later, I have still not touched the west end of my studio !!!!

One great news that I wanted to share is that Eman (my youngest) qualified his entrance exam for year 5 in Bilal and sawaab’s school. So thats, one huge worry off my shoulder ! Its such a relief knowing I dont have to run around for the pick and drop. And that, now I can manage holidays which coincide with all of their schedules unlike before where there were too many variables which constantly played havoc with our plans.

Around June, I also got the Silhouette Cameo and as thrilled as I was to receive it, I am so ashamed to report, that inspite of having it all connected et al, I am yet to start working on it. There’s this real invisible glass between me and digital technology !! I suppose, I am one of those freaks who prefers to leave it intact, rather than fear damaging it.

Between all this, ofcourse, I did manage a couple of baby showers and was guest designer for two sites.  How I managed that ???  . . . . . . . was another story, what with all my supplies enjoying their vacation in the cartons that are flooding almost all my rooms !!!!

Its been a good year so far. I am grateful to Allah swt for giving us all good health and keeping us together. I am thankful that we are safe and have less time but are still blessed with creativity in our lives.

So now that I have broken the MIA spell, I look forward to filling you guys up with some of the “creative and unusual things happening lately” in the forthcoming posts.

Till then,

thank you for visiting me.
