Furniture ( Wooden Chest) Makeover

One of the first projects I tackled in my new home was the chests’s that we bought from Dubai.  We bought three of them through cargo. They are solid wood but have moved several homes domestically and internationally, hence the the scrapes and scratches.

chest makeover before1

It was a labor intensive project and time consuming but the results are fabulous.

I hope to transform the new home into a cross between coastal and shabby chic.  With that in mind, we bought grey sofas and grey chairs for the dining table from Teppermans.  I must confess, I am not pleased with the sofas, as I find the cushions, not firm enough, also not having a velcro patch under the cushions to keep them fastened, makes them slide out of position. Rather annoying.

The chairs are fabulous though.

Back to the project at hand.

chest makeover before2

After a good sanding and clean up, we gave the chests, three coats of paint.  The wait time was not as too long. But the time between 2nd and 3rd coat is longer.  Once they were done, I decided against distressing them and straight away, went into completing the project with two coats of varnish.

chest makeover before3

I used the roller for the paint and brush for the varnish.

Here is the end result.

The lounge room is still not completely presentable.  And just incase, your wondering, why there are white sheets on the sofa – 2 REASONS. I have 3 teenager sons and 7 cats who use the lounge sofas more than we do !!

Tutorial – how to upcycle twigs in a frame

Hello friends.

I am delighted that I will be sharing this post with Fluster Buster.  Infact I am excited that I will be contributing one of my projects every month with Fluster Buster !!

doodle buddies upcycle frame 1

I am drawn towards art which serves a purpose and helps the environment as well.  Art with found objects like plastic bottles and salvaged wood chunks is so much fun and gratifying too.

I love giving a new lease of life to the forsaken, the forgotten, and the overlooked items lying in the corners of our home.

Old, beat up photo frames are some of my favorite ‘patients’

Today I am using some twigs from my backyard and a picture frame which did not have a backboard and lacked a glass front as well – perfect for this project.

  • Frame
  • Glue gun
  • Spray paint
  • twigs
  • washi tape
  • foam heart embellishments (flowers, leaves, stars or any other embellishments can be used.)
  • Cardboard (stripes of cardboard for support in the back)
  • brads

Tutorial -How to upcycle wooden puzzle blocks?

What do you do when some of your puzzle blocks are missing ?

What do I do ?

Why ofcourse, I upcycle them. But naturally  .. Problem solved !

1

My oldest son is extremely fond of solving puzzles. However with 2 younger brothers around him who enjoy tossing puzzles pieces more than joining them together .. the older one has had it difficult and puzzle blocks go missing. 😦

Inspite of being incomplete, I kept them packed away for the longest time, until recently, when I decided to give them a makeover. (Its just NOT in my nature, to toss them out 🙂 )

So here is a simple pictorial of the transformation.

puzzle blocks makeoverpuzzle block makeover 4

I gently, wiped these blocks with a slightly damp rag.puzzle block makeover 3

Then applied two coats of indigo acrylic, on all sides of the blocks.

When the diecut machine is in progress, I like to cut a bunch of flowers, which i store in egg trays like this :upcycle egg tray to organizer

I found some diecuts that fit perfectly in the squarespuzzle block upcycle

I destressed the edges of the diecuts and stamped the letters which spelt FAMILY on one side and BE MINE on the other side.

So how do you like it ?

Isn’t it really easy ?

I continue to share projects that can inspire my friends and readers with ways to reuse/recycle/repurpose/upcycle household items.

Every decision starts with a very small but firm, first step. I hope you embrace the idea of recycling or repurposing this year.

If you have been recycling already,  I would love to read some of your ideas for eco friendly crafts too.

Tutorial – Tray Makeover with Decoupage

This makeover was easy and fun – just the kinda projects, I enjoy.

1The steps are super easy.

Decoupage is a very forgiving form of art. Alot of errors can be overlooked and ‘hidden’.

There’s something so soothing about shabby chic hence I’ve used pastel peach color. (Just cannot stand the wood color – but did not want to dump the tray either.)

tray makeover 1
Started with sanding the tray gently, followed by the first coat of gesso.

Loving the shabby chic look already !

I cannot emphasis how crucial, drying period is between coats.

i gave the tray a singe coat of modge podge.  Then I cut out some textured rice paper from #Creativa and genty spread it in the center of the tray. A few smaller flowers were stuck on the sides as well.  Remember to remove the air bubbles. I finished it off with another coat of modge podge and Voila !!

I love makeovers ! Lending a new lease of life to an old piece of furniture, utensil etc is such a delight.

Have you tried decoupage ? Believe me, its just a fancy french name for a very simple and fun craft.  Do, give it a go !

So, I am sharing this post with my lovely blog buddies here.

I’m honored that your stopped over here.

Hope you  have a bright and happy day.

DIY Tutorial – Upcycle Broken Frame

I love to salvage ‘stuff’.  I, almost always find inspiration ‘especially’ in broken items.  Unfortunately that also means, that alot of broken items don’t land up in the rubbish bin immediately in my home. (as they should) eg Broken mugs are stored to be used as mosaic material

Would you believe this frame was an empty shell with no base/back or glass infront and now — Ta da !!

we will help you

This frame was found in one of my frame piles and I decided to FINALLY work some of my magic on it.

upcycle broken frame 1

I absolutely love the HOPE sign below, but one of our new fosters (kitten) jumped high enough, to break it.

upcycle broken frame 8

Like I said, its not THAT EASY for things to be chugged in the bin – – –   at my place !!

(the fact that my husband and sons are fed up of my habit is another story for another day though  )

Long story short –

I decided somehow the HOPE sign and the frame would look good together. Here’s a simple tutorial of what followed.

upcycle broken frame 2
The frame did not need to be sanding, so I proceeded with two coats of acrylic paint.
upcycle broken frame 3
Found this light weight, foam backing for the base/back. The frame had hooks intact on the back so I measured the black foam and cut to fit in the back of the frame.
upcycle broken frame 6
For the background, I got some cardboard and painted colors – colors that are generally out of my comfort zone eg yellow, purple, blue !
upcycle broken frame 5
I applied some DAP instant Grab adhesive to glue the two broken spaces on the HOPE letters.
upcycle broken frame 7
Let it rest for atleast 12 -14 hours.
collage art 1
Having painted stripes of cardboard, I went on to roughly place the stripes on the black base foam board to see how the pattern looked.
collage art 2
I decided, I did not want a symmetrical pattern and wanted a random distressed look . I snipped the excess cardboard which had exceeded the black foam’s border.
collage art 3
I measured and placed smaller pieces of cardboard on the empty edges
collage art 7
Then I hot glued all the pieces along with regular PVA glue for additional strength.
collage art 8
Finally I placed the frame over and adhered it from behind.

upcycle broken frame 19upcycle broken frame 18 betterupcycle broken frame betterupcycle broken frame 17

  • I wanted to give a 3D effect to the sign hence I added a piece of cardboard on the back of the HOPE sign at two places and hot glued the sign to the colorful background.   That way, it gives a popping out impression.
  • I have added random thin golden paint strokes to conceal the spots where it had broken – in turn giving it a more marble-like effect.
  • It is necessary to give one coat of modge podge or varnish on the entire frame and background – so as to make it more durable and it will be easy to clean it in future too (from dust etc since it does not have a glass covering)

I absolutely love how this turned out.  Did you like it too ??

I am sharing this post with my lovely blog buddies here.

Really glad you dropped by today.

Hope you  have a bright and happy day.

Tutorial DIY -Easy Upcycled Photo Frame

Hello friends,

Do you like to quill ?  I love quilling and I really like collecting  photo frames as well as  frames for paintings.  This project is an ideal mix of both.

Most of my picture frame collection comes from stores like Pan Emirates,  Home Center, Ikea as is section and garage sales.

I’m almost obsessed with finding potential in unexpected mundane objects which are considered trash. Some projects start immediately, while some bare bones, are stacked in the shed, on a waiting list.

The past two weeks, I have been super inspired to work with frames, so at long last, a pile of photo frames are being repurposed and dressed with some simple and easy art. This one, being the first one.

Our guests are pleasantly surprised when they find out that the creations are my own !

I believe, alittle creativity, color and innovation can transform the ugliest objects into pieces of art.

Here is one Ikea frame which I found in the ‘as is’ section which did not have a glass protection in front.  Ofcourse, I was overjoyed 🙂

It was perfect for my three dimensional quilled heart.

I love the contrast of the white frame against a cardboard background – with pink and red flowers in the foreground.  The pearls were a last minute addition but i feel, they really enhance the look of the flowers.

Infact, I think, I will start a wall gallery for all my art frames projects.

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this frugal simple creation.

Recycled objects :-

  • Photo frame
  • corrugate cardboard.
  • scraps of scrapbook design paper.

Upcycle A Broken Mirror

” Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !! “

Some of my favorite words are, create, creativity, craft, upcycle and repurpose !          What are yours ?

UPCYCLE THE MIRROR TO DISPLAY JEWELRY (1)

Like I explained in my previous post, I have been designing jewelry.   We held two trunk shows, and I found that we were short of display units for my leather jewelry collection.

Alittle scavenging into our shed, and my trusted wingman was back with a full size narrow mirror that we had dumped in there, a few years back !!  I bet your asking why I stored a broken mirror stand, right ?  My husband asks that ALL THE TIME !!!  I’ll give you the reply, I give him – We’ll find a use for it someday. (not that he ever believes me 🙂 )  But for once – THAT DAY, finally came !!

Obviously, the stand looked worn out but I decided, to keep the shabby chic distress look on the white border, but paint the cork board, within.

newestDSC_6774JPG

The diehard optimist in me, only noticed that the wood was sturdy and the size was perfect to hold as many as 40 pairs of earings !!

newDSC_6775JPG (1)

A couple of coats of paint should do the trick.

newDSC_6778JPG

I  mixed some white acrylic to a pastel shade of peach and pink to get this color.

newestDSC_6777JPGnewDSC_6782JPG (2)

A dozen or so nails on the side to hang the strings at and voila ! We have a display unit to hang our jewelry – from TRASH !!!

newDSC_6784JPG

Absolutely in love with this  piece !! Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !!!! 🙂

Creative Craft Mornings

Over the past several years, my skills have evolved.  I feel a sense of satisfaction after every completed project. Sometimes, even a little disappointed after a failed completed project – never the less, just the sheer joy of being able to create something with my own hands is exhilarating.

Till the period we were living at Arabian Ranches, I held craft workshop for ladies and art classes for children. That was, till 5 years back.  And then we moved to Al Warqa.

I missed my routine friendly creative exchanges with ladies and the young ones too.

There is such immense joy, when you have been instrumental in helping someone discover a latent talent.

Hence, moving to The Villa – Dubailand, gave me the opportunity to restart my workshops.

It was one of the best things about 2017, for me – CCM (creative craft mornings).

I was conducting craft workshops for women at my villa.

After a hiatus of nearly 5 years, I restarted this initiative and I was overwhelmed by the response.

In Dubai, we have sewing/quilt/crochet clubs, and we have quilling/papercrafting classes, however, I feel, there are far too many crafts that cannot be categorized and thats exactly, what I was offering.

There were ladies from the age group of 22 right upto 72 years !!  These were ladies, who had the zest to learn, inspite of busy schedules and running a hectic lifestyle, between career and family.   Ladies, who had to pick children from school, prepare a meal, manage their homes, attend meetings and yet they believed in giving the workshop, a chance.

I prefer to address all of them as my friends, rather than my students becoz, in essence, I learnt more from them than I taught them.  If we are really passionate about something, we will find a way to pursue it.  One of my dear friend came from Arabian Ranches and another friend from Mamzar while yet another from Jumeirah Beach Residence !!!

Finding a haven where you won’t be judged or laughed at, is precious. We learn better, we explore deeper, we grow further and we develop faster.

We did a project, where my friends had to hammer nails into a block of wood. I was really surprised to observe how quickly they learnt, steadied their hands and hit the hammer with firmness and not only that, its quite tiring having to hit the hammer 25 – 30 times.

Every project they attempted was remarkable, considering no one had attempted such projects before.

Every one learnt something new, a skill, a technique, a design,  especially me.

I learnt that, making friends with like minded creative people is A GIFT !!  And I cherish these friendships.

I was truly overwhelmed.

Enthusiasm, patience and perseverance are the only ingredients needed to brew any success story.

Needless to say, the results were amazing.

Here are some photos :-

I am determined to restart these workshops again this year as well.

I truly hope to be able to carry on with newer projects here in Mirdif too.

Do you enjoy a particular hobby ?  Are there any workshops close to where you live ? Would you like to join CCM in Dubai ?

Upcycled chalk board tray.

Hey friends ! How’ve you been ?

If you’ve been following me, then you know, that the past couple of weeks have been nothing short of a roller coaster ride for me. I have been participating in several weekend fairs and exhibitions. Not only has it been exhaustive but for a change, we have been such an “outdoorish” family !!

I have been loving the fairs, interacting with people, getting little hands to try out crafts and just having a blast letting these events dry the creative juices out of me !! Its been fun.

I am one of those people who works best under pressure. I have a tendency to try out a dozen projects for a couple of days, and then there are those ‘slumpy’ days when I am glued to pinterest/fb and almost never enter the studio for weeks.

This particular chalk board tray was from ELC, I think. The boys used it for a couple of years until we moved into Warqa House and then, it gave in 😦  I loved the thin wooden tray used to keep chalks and dusters on both sides.  It was a shame to let it go, given it was made of wood and I really like those cheerful snakes/worms. So I unscrewed the trays and it remained as a stationery organizer sitting parallel to eachother on Sawaab’s desk.

Long story short. While the past few weeks have been full of finding dumped tree trunks and branches and utilizing them in various ways.  I decided, I could give that tray a facelift. The best way to organize on a busy study desk is to go vertical  ! I cut out two chunks of wood trunks and used the drill machine to drill some holes in them from above and bottom.

From not having a place to keep the pair, we not have 2 boys quarreling over who gets to keep it to display their stationery !!

upcycle chalkboard tray4

DSC_0927 DSC_0929

I decided against painting the trunks ~ Love the rustic look against the comical child-like colors of the trays.

Upcycle chalkboard tray

I love how the little branch protrudes from the main trunk. I deliberately trimmed it and kept it that way. I feel it adds character to piece. Do you ?

This was one of my fastest projects to date !! It was over in just a matter of minutes. So if you too have any two pieces of shelves that could be given a similar look, please share it with me.

Ikea Pigeon Hole Organizer Makeover Tutorial

Ikea pigeon hole organizer makeover

I love the Ikea pigeon hole organizer.  Not necessary for functionality but I just love the look of tiny pockets ! This pigeon hole organizer  has been in the family for a couple of years.

Buddy would keep his hot wheels cars in them.  Eventually He outgrew the toys and I was only too happy to be the next recipient. Ofcourse, by now, you already know, that few things get dumped in our home, until and unless the cats chew on them or pee on them !!!

A little tender, love and makeover is all it kept screaming out to me for ~ until finally I decided to decoupage it.

Decoupage sounds like a very fancy French word but in reality, it just means to stick objects with paper cut outs. So don’t let the French term, intimidate you 🙂

The surface needs to be cleaned and sanded well. A layer of modge podge or any such medium can be applied. Then you can cut out pieces of tissue or paper and stick it on carefully. Make sure to get any air bubbles out.  When your certain, that its dried, apply another coat of modge podge to seal it. This is the tutorial in a nut shell.

Here’s the pictorial 🙂

DSCF2069

Hideous, isn’t it ??? Whats the connection between little boys and the skull face with two cross bones, still remains a mystery to me !!

DSCF2070

Ugly paint sticking out from our previous wall paint on its edges.

DSCF2079

First, I gathered design paper, in various patterns and colors and decided how the collage should be placed. This project is excellent at getting rid of good by small scraps of paper !

DSCF2083

Took measurements and decided which cutouts would contrast with which patterns. Then came my drawer of amazing edge punches ! Oh how I love Martha stewart 🙂 ok ok Fiskars, I love you too 🙂

DSCF2085

One after the other, I distressed the edges and kept covering them all with modge podge. (I am quite the distress-addict 🙂

DSCF2088

For the top, side and bottom, I painted some off-white synthetic paint. Two coats got me the results I wanted.

DSCF2094

Finally, I coated one layer of modge podge on the pigeon holes.              AND ………………………………………….. VOILA !!!!!!!!

Talking of decoupage, If your looking for decoupage supplies in Dubai. I am happy to recommend the decoupage specialist, Creativa Middle East. Located at Times Square, they have a huge array of art and decoupage supplies. Definitely the go-to place for Decoupage.

Face Qibla.

Hello friends.

It feels wonderful being back after my Ramadhan break.  I am grateful to be alive, in good health and happy to be able to fill you up with my creative endeavors.

Today I am sharing a simple plaque.  The message is the focus, and the message is deep ~ hence I did not want to add any fancy embellishments to distract the essence of this quote.

The definition of Qiblah is the direction of the Kaaba (the sacred building at Mecca), to which Muslims turn to, at prayer.

Muslims all over the world, pray towards the Kaaba, five times a day.  However the meaning of this quote is far deeper than that.

Wooden Crate Makeover ~ Tutorial.

This wooden crate is from ELC had been a resident in Eman’s room (the youngest son)  till last year,  where a couple of Action Men has established their headquarters in it.  As Eman grew older so did his collection. I made him a more suitable place as the headquarters of his Action Men. (that’s another later post)

You already know that very few storage items find their way to my trash can, hence that also meant that the little box was again at the mercy of yours truly.  I decided to work on its appearance before qualifying it to enter the “girl” domain (my craft studio)

Naturally (darlings as they are)  my boys always come to my rescue  (or should I just say, I have my ways of persuading them !!) We got all those hideous stickers out, alittle sanding, 2 coats of matt pink paint, some stencils on the longer edges and some chalk paint on the shorter edge and we have a pleasant looking crate !

I think, all the pictures are in the way of a self-explanatory pictorial. I hope you like the new look of the charming little crate. It has been housing several tiny buckets of paint brushes, copic markers, and stationery.

I am sharing this crate transformation with the following link parties here.
