6th fair in Dubai.

Our last fair participation was at Uptown Mirdiff. It was a relatively small fair, mainly for the community. But it was well organized.¬† Being so close to Al Warqa, we were nearly in our comfort zone ūüôā

With every new fair, something new is learnt and some improvements are made. You tend to learn to be better prepared.

Here are some of the pictures of the set up.

The outdoor fair season is relatively short in Dubai, so one has to make the most of it, while it lasts.

Thank you for visiting us today.

Pizza box turned to Shadow box !

Two weeks back, I participated in one of these creative group challenges on facebook. They asked to work on some form of altered art on a shadow box. Naturally everyone participating, rushed to Ikea to pick shadow boxes worth dhs 30 !  Frugal me instead, decided to improvise. We have a tradition in our home of having a pizza party every Friday afternoon. My husband loves to pamper the boys on the one day he is at home with us. ( That minus the almost 5 other days, we have a meal out !)

Since¬†Pizza Hut’s¬†meal for four has two medium size boxes,¬†I generally don’t¬†dispose those boxes after the meal. They get stacked up in my new white cupboard which stocks all “recycleable ” stuff like cat food tins/cans, pringle tubes, empty¬†toilet rolls and what have you ! You get the idea, don’t you !! Yes, very few things find their way into the bin in this house ¬†ūüôā¬† I suppose, Dubai Muncipality should be appreciating my efforts to keep a recycling center right IN my house !!¬† ūüôā

Anyways, back to the story :- So naturally I turn to the pizza box and try to envision the transformation !!  Strangely,  its really not so difficult to make at all !

Here’s the process :-

I measured a large square on the back or base of the box  { it is more sturdy since it gets additional support from the three adjoining sides } almost 1 inch away from the edge on all four sides. Make a crease on that line so that cutting thru it will be easier.  Then cut thru the measured square on all four sides with a sharp  blade. I used my steel ruler/scale to give me direction and support. BTW, this particular project did not use a pizza hut box instead it is of another pizza company.

Once the face/base of the box was cut off, I then measured a large 12 x 12 scrapbooking paper as per the dimensions of the inside of the box. Applied some white glue to the paper and adhered it to the box inside.

This is the stage where the box is now ready for all the decoration to drop on it.  Let the designing begin !

Since I had a rough idea of how I wanted it to look, I divided the box into four parts. The top being the largest while the below had three nearly equal parts. It was divided by a black polka dot ribbon on top and black thin left-over cardstock. Strangely enough, this is the part that took the longest and I made a couple of goof ups here !!

I had planned to keep the theme romantic, hence I distressed some blue wooden alphabets spelling “Love” and glued them haphazardly on the top¬†half of the box. Later I cut three heart shapes¬†out of a story book¬†paper¬† and gently glued them together in the center. I¬†then glued the hearts on the boxes in the below¬†part. I repeated this process twice for the other two parts as well.

I made spiral flowers out of some left over papers and adhered them with hot glue towards the top right side of the “love sign” and the bottom left side too. Some small flowers were also glued for an added¬†effect.

For the frame look of the shadow box. I measured and cut four stripes of patterned paper and attached it to the “frame” !

and ……….. Voila !!

It took less than an 1 1/2 hour to finish this entire project and apart from the wooden alphabets, I am sure, everyone carries almost all of the said items in their homes !

So ? What’d you think ?¬† ¬†I really hope, I have inspired some¬†one¬†out there.¬†to try out something similar ¬†!!

Please feel free to tell me how you liked my ‘¬†pizza box turned¬†shadow box’ . Oh yeah, my creativity and thinking out of the box, did cost me !!¬† Sadly, the challenge was for a shadow box and they disapproved the transformation of the pizza box to the shadow box !!! They decided they did not want to accept anything less than a prim and proper shadow box !!

So I licked¬†my wounds and then licked some more, for¬†a couple¬†of days and later, pushed my disappointments into making a whole lot of more pizza boxes into shadow boxes ! !!¬† Folks, that’s Naush for you !!!¬† Down but not for long :)))

Frankly,  I had a lot of fun, visualizing, then designing, then goofing up, then re-designing, and then actually improving and making it work for me !! Challenge or not ~ competition or not ~ I am happy with my little project. How about you ?

Have you ever been let down by some silly rule of any challenge after making a real effort to participate ? I mean, everyone is always talking about thinking out of the box these days, well¬† I literally did think “out of the box” and guess where it got me !!!¬† ūüôā

Art & Craft Ideas, Art Classes Students

Summer Arts & Crafts Tips ~ part 1.

Hello friends.  How have you been ?

Well, me ? I’m exhausted but on cloud 9. Exhausted becoz I am conducting summer craft workshop for students in the day and repeating the activities in the evening with my boys !! Agreed I am crazy about making stuff, but when you have to do repeats of the whole shabang all over a couple of hours later, it really breaks my back.

My students are a lovely 9 year old polite brother and talented sister. It has been such a joy teaching them the many techniques in art. I am especially always happy when I get students who are genuinely interested in learning something, rather than just having a get together.

Here are just some of the projects, they have done with me :

We have been enjoying with some¬†lighter activities too. Some of them are inspired by the talented ladies of blogland. Please feel free to ask any details about the process¬†and recipes used.¬†These are really light and refreshing activities for children, especially beneficial to children, who need the “push” with touch and feel activities and most importantly, they keep them busy for long periods of time.

We began with blowing bubbles ~ who made the largest bubbles and who had the largest bowl of bubbles and finally, who got the most bubbles on his bubble imprint sheet.

We then moved to the shaving cream foam. The boys had a blast with these activities. My boys are 9, 10 and 12. All three of them have dyslexia with the last two, also having ADHD. Playing with foam was especially fun and gave them a sense of freedom. Where generally I dont encourage these kind of messy activities in the dinning room, lest they ruin the rug, I realized, alittle compromise goes a long way. The boys could’nt have enough of the foam fun. And ofcourse, who ever thought there would’nt be a foam fight, does not have boys !Here is sawaab, experimenting with foam patiently. The silence before the storm ūüôā

and then all the Real Fun began !

Why are “little boys and gooey/messy stuff”, a deadly combination for moms ? You dont have to answer that question. The¬†picture above is the self explanatory answer. Yep ~ hands, feet, clothes and even Buddy’s glasses had foam on them. But, truth be told, I would repeat this activity with the boys, at the drop of a hat. Thats just how much fun they had. How free they felt to mess up. How closer, I found them to myself. All that fun and laughter was well worth the mess. I really had fun just watching and filming them. It was crazy and hilarious !

The activity was : Mixing acrylics in foam lather and making swirls with a skewer stick to leave imprints on A4.

The next day, we worked with colors. Making¬†circles with cup rims and filling watercolors in. Although we were supposed to stick to primary colors. The boys decided they wanted to¬†fill more colors. so voila … you can see the stunning result.

Next, I wanted to check if the children of a craft savvy mom have anything remotely resembling an artistic gene !! Alas !!

Two lessons later, there is remarkable improvement. Needless to say, there is still room for “alot” of improvements ūüôā But we’re getting there, lots of fun and lots of practise, one day at a time.

Notice how both boys have used the eyebrows and movement of lips to distinguish between happy/sad/angry. Not bad for a first timer.

A few tips, a few ideas and alittle coaching later, a good attempt at making a boy’s portrait.¬† For boys who barely ever paint, I think, it was a good attempt. Besides, Like I always say, art is all about the process, not about the result. If the process was fun, then the result is bound to be remarkable.

Feeling more confident. They all wanted to now, make the change and try out a girl’s portrait. Look at those serious faces and all the hard work going into their projects.

And a little later :

Spectacular !!!!!!!

Not only am I so pleased with the beautiful pictures, all the details they put in, but I’m so glad, I got to spend some time ‘WITH THEM’¬†out of the computer studio !!!¬† Most importantly,¬†they are enjoying themselves. I hope, you are¬†inspired¬†from some of these pictures and try out some of the activities with your children. Children forget alot of things but they never forget the time spent with them doing something “they” liked, which does become incredibly difficult as we all age.

I’m so happy that you stopped by, my site. I hope to see you here more often. If you’d like to keep in touch with my posts, you can subsribe to my blog¬†in the column on the right.

Please enjoy making and sharing a little joy over the summer period. Come september and we’ll all be hearing the¬†express train whistling again so enjoy what you have now ~ Time !!! and Time with the kids.

Hugs and kisses to all my friends and subsribers.
