Tutorial – Wreath from a pizza box !

Hello friends,

Thank you very much for all your encouragement and well wishes, that you leave in your comments, for the projects I share here.  It is a joy to read each one of your  messages.  Truly humbled.

Tutorial for upcycling pizza box into a wreath

It really breaks my heart to see the amount of cardboard and plastic, in good condition, being dumped.

I love finding ways to reuse, upcycle or repurpose household stuff, especially kitchen ware like plastic bottles, cereal boxes, milk cartons, milk jugs etc.

We have a set tradition of having Pizza from Pizza Hut for Friday lunch (our weekend)

And that’s how I have heaps of pizza boxes !!

Today, I am sharing a simple yet easy way to use the cardboard from the pizza box to make a wreath.

The felt flowers are also handmade. You can find the tutorial to those HERE.

This frame was salvaged from a friend, who was leaving the country and wanted to get rid of it since it was too large and had no glass in the front. Ofcourse, I rescued it.

Here’s the tutorial :

Now for the bunting:

The heart shape in the wreath is made with white foam which was packaging material in the box, from a recently bought earphone set.  I added a felt heart and a button over it. And voila, it looks lovely !

I think, its stinkin cute !   I liked it enough to have it hung in the hallway.

Black and white stripes with pops reds and pinks is just so attractive.

I believe, crafters can breath life into any mundane object with their glue guns and some paint  🙂 – One minute that box could have been chugged into the bin but we found a way to make it adorn our walls.

Although, I have designed the frame and wreath with the HOME sentiment,  It could be easily replaced with words like Love, faith, friends or names of festivals.

I hope you find inspiration in my projects and might consider attempting some of them.

I am sharing this project with my blog buddies  here .

Tutorial – Felt Phone Pouch

Hello Friends.

I’m back with a fun and funky felt pouch tutorial.

felt pouch tutorial (8)

In my previous post, I shared, how we can make hair accessories, jewelry as well as book marks with felt, so today, we’ll see how we can design a fun felt case or pouch for the mobile phone.

Ofcourse, you can use these pouches to carry anything apart from phones as well.

You can also gift it your friends as valentines gift or mothers day gift or even teachers day gifts.

I must confess, I am quite a novice at sewing.  The only thing, I can sew is fallen off buttons !! But I decided to break the curse 😉 and give it a try.

The black pouch was the first one I sewed so the irregularities in the stitches, are pretty obvious, but I think, I got the hang of it by the time, I started the second (blue) pouch.

So I started with a rectangle shape, after measuring my phone dimensions and . . . .

I know, the sewing is far from good but i think, with the next pouch, I tried the blanket stitch and turned out looking great.

Bonus tutorial of how to make a tassel !!!

I could not have taken more photos while tying the tassel since I’d need more than 2 hands !

I’m delighted with these pouches.  My mobiles sit perfectly in them.

I have added two quilled flowers ( tutorial here) in the blue pouch. I distressed the flowers with some (Tim Holtz) Rangers Distress ink.

I think the pictorial is pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it ?

I hope you liked it and might consider attempting a felt creation !

Tutorial – Felt flowers and uses.

Hi friends.

Today I am sharing a few samples of flowers made with felt.

felt flowers for valentines

Whether your crafting with children or adults, you’ll love playing with felt. Its an easy material, which is quite forgiving.  Unlike paper, its not very thin, and unlike fabric, its not very fluid. It can hold its shape well and can be adhered easily, with just a dab or two, of glue.

There are several tutorials available on Youtube to demonstrate how to make different types of flowers with felt.  Since I was designing a few, I took a few pictures.

Once you roll the flower to the end, add some hot glue to the base of the flower, and adhere the rolled up flower to the base.  I could not take a photo of that. ( I would need three arms to do so !)

Attach two green leaves to the back of the base and voila ! Here you have it.felt flower (2)

Six felt circles is all it takes, to make this lovely flower.

You need a  long strip of felt, 2 cm wide and 9 cm long for this flower.

felt necklace
This is an easy necklace made with leftover strips of excess felt. Just roll two different colors of felt together ( same width) and form this quill. Use little hot glue to seal the ends.  I sewed the rolls together with a thick needle.
felt bookmark
This is a simple yet effective bookmark made with a little elastic string and three felt circles.

Kids love to craft with felt.  Something about the texture and bright colors, really attracts little ones.

In addition to the bookmark and necklace, I have used felt to design flowers for hair accessories, jewelry like brooches and journal covering, in the past.

So, have you crafted with felt, ever ?

Christmas Decor – Upcycle a photo frame to a wreath.

Thinking out- of- the- box comes naturally to some, while some of us have to figure out this  thought process.

Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath

I’ve made several frame projects and plenty of wreaths, however, this time, I’m creating a mix of the two !

I love baubles – But who doesn’t  ??

I took a few baubles of various sizes and hot glued them on the back of a picture frame which had a damaged glass. Naturally it was a perfect candidate for my experiment 🙂

The once sad and damaged frame, now has a renewed function ( and friends) !!  It poses in style with its new buddies.

For those of you who visit me regularly, already know, by now, that nothing gives me more pleasure than breathing a new lease of life into old, damaged goods.   Most of my frames are bought at Ikea as is section,  Pan Emirates or  garage sales.   Its a shame that here, in Dubai, we have places where we can donate our clothes, shoes or even books – but there aren’t any places like the  charity stores in the West.  So most of us put up garage sales or join the only flea market available here 😦

What do you do with broken or damaged frames ?

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this easy and festive creation.

Recycled objects :-

  • Damaged photo frames
  • Previous years baubles
  • Old bows

Upcycle A Broken Mirror

” Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !! “

Some of my favorite words are, create, creativity, craft, upcycle and repurpose !          What are yours ?

UPCYCLE THE MIRROR TO DISPLAY JEWELRY (1)

Like I explained in my previous post, I have been designing jewelry.   We held two trunk shows, and I found that we were short of display units for my leather jewelry collection.

Alittle scavenging into our shed, and my trusted wingman was back with a full size narrow mirror that we had dumped in there, a few years back !!  I bet your asking why I stored a broken mirror stand, right ?  My husband asks that ALL THE TIME !!!  I’ll give you the reply, I give him – We’ll find a use for it someday. (not that he ever believes me 🙂 )  But for once – THAT DAY, finally came !!

Obviously, the stand looked worn out but I decided, to keep the shabby chic distress look on the white border, but paint the cork board, within.

newestDSC_6774JPG

The diehard optimist in me, only noticed that the wood was sturdy and the size was perfect to hold as many as 40 pairs of earings !!

newDSC_6775JPG (1)

A couple of coats of paint should do the trick.

newDSC_6778JPG

I  mixed some white acrylic to a pastel shade of peach and pink to get this color.

newestDSC_6777JPGnewDSC_6782JPG (2)

A dozen or so nails on the side to hang the strings at and voila ! We have a display unit to hang our jewelry – from TRASH !!!

newDSC_6784JPG

Absolutely in love with this  piece !! Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !!!! 🙂

Where do you buy craft supplies from, in Dubai ? Part 2.

24 Years in this beautiful city called Dubai, and I’m still in love with the spirit of this city.  I believe, Spirit is not defined by tall, fancy structures, sophisticated transport system, exuberant hotels or a show of unimaginable wealth. But the spirit of a city engulfs, the culture of its native inhabitants, the simplicity of their existence in a rapidly growing and glowing environment. It is also characterized by how quickly, it can adapt to change while preserving its hospitable nature as hosts. The maintenance of regulations, the observance of discipline and respect, the conservation of its fauna and flora are just a few to name.  Infact, today, I feel, this vivacious city, bloomed right before my eyes.

From harsh unforgiving dunes rose a mighty tower that attracts more visitors from all over the world – by the hour !!! From a trading port, today, it is recognized equally for being a tourist haven. Dubai has changed perceptions.  Dubai has challenged and accepted challenges. Dubai has morphed from a transit city to a tranquil dwelling for thousands. It has smoothly flourished and enabled thousands to burgeon as well.

15 years back, I started toying around, with the idea of crafting with my toddlers, reawakening a latent passion for arts.  However, there were no classes, workshops or tutorials to cater to the craft enthusiasts. (ie non-art academic students) And neither were there, any specialized hobby stores.

craft-supplies6

Ofcourse, where we’ve been fortunate with some excellent stationery stores like Dubai Library distribution, Farouq Stationery, Al Furqaan, which, carry basic school, office, art supplies in addition to kits for various activities eg. knitting, jewelry making, cardmaking and such  .. but there were limitations … infact plenty of limitations back then.

From an ‘era’ where internet was about the long and erratic wait to a dial up connection and where, skills were limited to enrolling in specialized classes, the average ‘crafting Joe’ struggled with realizing his potential quirky element !! Infact, names of some supplies were still unheard of then !  While rubberstamping was a rage, soon scrapbooking and Card-making followed suit.  Dozens of  hobbies became easily attainable and convenient for the avid but non-art-student with the advent of the ‘world wide web’ like quilling, decoupage, mixed media, paper-making, mosiac, print-making, flower making, sewing, knitting, origami, photography – just to name a few !

However, an optimistic craft enthusiast and an ardent shopper, has been a beastly concoction brewing within me ! My pursuit to explore and ‘gather’ (notice I used the word, ‘gather’ which gradually qualified into hoarding !!) rubber stamps, embellishments, die cuts, decoupage sheets, quilling needles etc,  had me rummaging through the bustling nooks and crannies of a ‘more tame’ and much more smaller Dubai and Sharjah !  Stores in Deira that would stock laces, beads and buttons – the local haberdashery, mainly for fabric and textile purposes – but it was an adventure and when I would finally land on an ‘ideal’ store – it was like hitting jackpot !!

craft-supplies-7

Paper lane, Creative Hands and Elves and fairies were one of our first sources for scrapbooking and card making supplies.craft-supplies8

While Wasco White star in Jumeirah, was a teacher’s paradise. They hosted top quality, costumes, party ware and school supplies, all made in USA.

craft-supplies5

I bought my son’s first craft kit from …………………………………….. Toys r us !!!! (In all honesty, my little guy never got to use it – It was mine from the moment we got home  😉 )

If you ever google “hobby crafts” – it would lead you to stores which carry motorized toy cars, helicopters, boats and hummers ! ( you get, which ones I mean, right ?)

STEIN, GERMANY - JULY 05: A variation of colour pencils are displayed at the industrial selling shop at the Faber-Castell factory on July 5, 2011 in Stein near Nuremberg, Germany. Faber-Castell is among Germany's leading manufacturer of pencils, pens, art supplies, office supplies and high-end writing instruments, and was founded in Stein in 1761 by Kaspar Faber. Through a marriage in 1900 to the noble Castell family the company took its present name and is currently lead by Count Anton von Faber-Castell. The company still has two production plants in Germany but has its biggest manufacturing centers overseas, including in South America, Indonesia and China. The company will mark its 250th anniversary on July 8. (Photo by Ralph Orlowski/Getty Images)

Fast forward 2016, we are spoilt for choices !! Some amazing stores that have been providing a vast variety of scrapbooking, paper crafting, decoupage, fabric, textiles, paints, canvases and other hobby supplies are :-

Three stores that carry a wide stock of art and craft supplies as well as ready made products are :-

craft-supplies3

I would not like to belittle the importance of the dhs 1 – dhs 10 stores, scattered all over the city, much like the Day to Day stores, these outlets can also act as catalysts for the innovative mind. (Their only shortcoming limited to their quality)

Ofcourse, Ace Hardware is every DIYer’s paradise ! But I also loved the DIY section at Clas Ohlen .

Naif Road and the back alleys of Gold souk still remain my favorite hotspots for buttons, beads, lace, fabric and embellishments. However, these are stores that are wholesalers, hence if you are looking for only a dozen buttons, its not worth struggling in this area – the store keeper is not going to entertain any quantity, lesser than a carton !!!

There has been a positive shift and crafters are utilizing the convenience of online shopping as well !!

My previous post on the same subject was nearly, 4 years back. Its pretty obvious how many more outlets have opened doors and virtual doors to creative individuals.

One of the most common comments, I receive on this blog are not comments – but questions !

Questions about where to buy supplies from, what material is durable, which glue is best for which surface, what are my go to stores for which items, which paint for what project, how to design a small garden etc. These are some of my most asked questions I receive.

I hope to be able to enlighten you with all the answers in a few weeks. Meanwhile, I hope you take advantage of all the above information and enjoy, shopping and completing creative projects.

Thank you for visiting me today. Trust you will stay a while and leave some love in your comments.
