Gifts in Dubai.

Hello dear friends !

I’m an erratic blogger ūüôā¬† (But¬†you already know that, by now ūüėČ )¬† There have been times when, you could¬†read three¬†posts, back to back and then there are times, when you see me once in three months. In the blog-world, consistency is VERY IMPORTANT.¬†¬†I am yet to play by the book !

Over the past 11 years, I have been fortunate enough to have a beautiful relationship with any and all forms of art.

I did not restrict myself to water colors or decoupage ~ I am a restless eager soul, I have experienced and enjoyed every craft.

What started from card making has just made it way thru to DIY and home décor.

Sometimes I find myself going on a spin in a perplexed state¬†when ‘newbies’¬† ask me what I fancy most.

The past 5 months have been remarkably fantastic and have helped me, better define myself.

I cannot thank Almighty Allah swt enough for his grace.

November and December 2014~ were months dedicated to a dozen or more craft fairs. I love fairs and all the planning, preparation and exhaustion, that comes with it !

January 2015 ~ Gulf News published an article about me and my work !  I was beside myself.

January 2015 ~ We completed a 3-Day Art and Craft workshop.

February 2015 ~ Organic Café and Foods Supermarket, displayed my handmade greeting cards.

February 2015 ~ Aspen House Gifts, got the much needed boost it so anticipated, with several baby shower favors and wedding favors orders.

March 2015 РI was requested to be chief guest at the Arts and design Faculty of the American University of Dubai. It was an honor beyond words !

Over the years, I have been blessed to accomplish, all the creative adventures, I dive into, thanks to Allah swt and a lot of patience from my better half and boys. However, there are times, when I question myself, if I am, more of a mixed media artist, or a craft teacher or a carpenter, a card maker or a business woman or a DIY enthusiast. Perhaps, the past 5 months, have given me a glimpse of all who I am.

An amalgamation of all these endeavors.

Today, Let me share with you alittle about Aspen House Gifts.

20 Ways to recycle fancy carry bags/shopping bags.

Hello friends. I’m so glad your visiting me today. How have you been ?

If you’re visiting me, having read the title of this post, then naturally, your a craft or a recycling enthusiast. Either ways, I am so happy to share some of my ideas with you.

Two things that are found in abundance after any seasonal holiday, are, carry bags and wrapping papers. As a nature lover, I find myself investing a lot of my time, energy and creativity around, recycling, reusing and upcycling things. There can be nothing but gains out of this initiative.

Today, I am sharing a very simple idea with you.¬† My children take my craft studio for granted !! They assume that any and every art related supply can be provided on a 24 hourly basis ~ free of charge ~ in my studio !! Hence, finding them snooping around in the studio at odd hours, looking for a special¬†design paper, or a fine nib sharpie, does not surprise me anymore. What‚Äôs more, I almost expect them to arrive at the 11th hour, in need of some ‚Äėurgent‚Äô help for a school project !!

Such was the case of my youngest, who, comes in late one evening looking for a large craft sheet for a Ronald Dahl project. I did not have one at my disposal but I noticed I had 2 large carry bags from a baby store,  which could fit the bill. A little trimming here and there, a few snips and we had our very colorful chart ready.

Its not something extravagant. Its something very simple which cost, virtually NOTHING !!  His classmates never realized that it was just a carry bag turned into a chart paper. (until he pointed it out to them)  I am glad, that the few students in his class, now realize, that they too, don’t need to dump large, fancy carry-bags.

They too can use it in numerous ways.  If nothing else, Paper bags can be recycled with other paper items, making them as easy to recycle as tossing them in the bin or taking them to a collection center.

Ronald Dahl school project

I have turned this carry bag into a chart paper for a project. However, because, these carry bags use a sturdy quality of paper so as to carry things, their general quality can serve various other uses too. For instance :-

You can :-

  • Cut bits of these in various shapes and stick it to your pencils, as pencil poppers
  • Use them to cover journals or autograph books or even book binding
  • Cut and stick large heart and star shapes onto a straw and gift it to your class friends etc
  • Cut small pieces and make a collage out of it.
  • Make a flip book from them.
  • Cut thin strips and use in quilling projects
  • Cut long and large sheets and make bookmarks from them
  • With the help of a paper punch, cut designs and use as a sticker.
  • There are several youtube videos to show you how to make small boxes with sturdy and glossy paper.
  • You could also make a simple envelope with them.
  • Making hats, calls for sturdy chart paper, replace it with our very-own-carry bag !!¬†
  • You can also use them in crafts like puppet-making
  • Or make large colorful flowers for a wreath !
  • Why not make a pin-wheel with this excellent material !

Another important aspect to remember is, that the cord handle of these bags are so useful too !!!

  • Attach a bell or a feather and turn it¬†into a cat toy
  • Glue some of them into a round coil shape and you have a lovely embellishment for your cards etc
  • You could also hot glue some of them in a coil shape and attach it to a hair pin
  • Use them in string art
  • Glue them on a toilet roll and get your little ones to use it as a painting accessory for textures.

These are just a few ways of recycling fancy carry bags, but I’m certain, there are dozens more ways of recycling which I haven’t thought off !  Please share with me your efforts in recycling too.

A chair makeover ! (short tutorial)

Dear friends, I have this HUGE good news to share with you.

I am super delighted to be honored with the “FAVORITE BLOG AWARD” from Expat Woman !!! You will notice my brand new¬†trendy badge shinning on the left sidebar.¬† This is the first recognition I have received from the middle east and in my own imaginary world ~ I feel almost like a celebrity !!!¬†¬†And a celebrity¬†gets to give a thank you speech ~¬† right ??

Don’t worry, I’ll keep it brief.¬†¬† I have always been an avid¬†diary writer from a young age so I think, it came quite naturally that I wished to share my creative adventures¬†in my tiny corner of the blog-world. That I’m receiving¬†visitors from¬†far and near, making friends and¬†being blessed with such¬†encouragement is a reward in itself, so receiving this award¬†is nothing short of a BONUS !¬†Thank you Expat woman¬†~ I so appreciate it.

Thank you friends for visiting my previous post about the 7 ways to repurpose pallets and leaving your own thoughts and ideas about upcycling the pallets. I’m always looking for inspiration and¬† I so hope to try out some of your ideas, provided some of those pallets are left !!

And now to the post at hand !

We never knew this poor chair existed until we moved to the new¬†house, last December and found it tucked away, somewhere behind in one of the sheds. Finally, after all these months, I’ve given it a little TLC and look at the transformation.

A little sanding ~ two glossy coats and alittle white acrylic paint on some patterned stencil, did  wonders to this neglected piece of furniture.

I love how it turned out¬†and it now graces my bedroom ūüôā

Heres a small pictorial showing a step by step process :-

A little sanding later and the grateful chair was pining for some color !

stencils are by Simply stencils – Plaid

I let the chair dry for nearly 3 days and then began the stenciling. Again, another help-at-hand ! That’s “mama cat”

I used a sponge to “dab” some white acrylic paint on the stencil.

Acrylic paint dries very quickly so if the paint has smudged at the edges, you have work quick to clean it up.

And there you have it !!

Recycled :- Chair, sponge (for dabbing ), foam container for spreading paint and dabbing sponge.

And that’s that !!

A little TLC can do wonders for not only humans but also objects ~ point proved.

Challenges, Different Card Folds, Easel Card, Eid Mubarak

Eid Greetings 1

Hello friends, today I am sharing something you probably have not heard of. For those of you who are wondering what “Eid Mubarak” is, here’s¬†a tiny explanation :-

Muslims follow the lunar calender and fast in the holy month of Ramadhan. The month could last for 29 or 30 days depending on the siting of the moon. When the new moon is seen, the following day is celebrated as Eid, which is the celebration for having been blessed with the holiest of all months, Ramadhan. As in all cultures and traditions, lots of sweet dishes are prepared and its a totally family oriented affair. Here in the middle east, exchanging of sweets amongst friends and collegues is practised, however for those over seas, cards are sent. This year, I was requested to design 3 Eid cards by Noor the coordinator for paperie designs which they wished to feature in their blog.

Here is the first card that I made.

It is an easel card and I am completely in love with the DP. It has the gorgeous vintage touch to it. And dont we already know, how crazy I am, about any shades of pink. The window is a digistamp and so is the oval sentiment. Plenty of diecuts used here.

Art & Craft Ideas, Art Classes Students

Summer Arts & Crafts Tips ~ part 1.

Hello friends.  How have you been ?

Well, me ? I’m exhausted but on cloud 9. Exhausted becoz I am conducting summer craft workshop for students in the day and repeating the activities in the evening with my boys !! Agreed I am crazy about making stuff, but when you have to do repeats of the whole shabang all over a couple of hours later, it really breaks my back.

My students are a lovely 9 year old polite brother and talented sister. It has been such a joy teaching them the many techniques in art. I am especially always happy when I get students who are genuinely interested in learning something, rather than just having a get together.

Here are just some of the projects, they have done with me :

We have been enjoying with some¬†lighter activities too. Some of them are inspired by the talented ladies of blogland. Please feel free to ask any details about the process¬†and recipes used.¬†These are really light and refreshing activities for children, especially beneficial to children, who need the “push” with touch and feel activities and most importantly, they keep them busy for long periods of time.

We began with blowing bubbles ~ who made the largest bubbles and who had the largest bowl of bubbles and finally, who got the most bubbles on his bubble imprint sheet.

We then moved to the shaving cream foam. The boys had a blast with these activities. My boys are 9, 10 and 12. All three of them have dyslexia with the last two, also having ADHD. Playing with foam was especially fun and gave them a sense of freedom. Where generally I dont encourage these kind of messy activities in the dinning room, lest they ruin the rug, I realized, alittle compromise goes a long way. The boys could’nt have enough of the foam fun. And ofcourse, who ever thought there would’nt be a foam fight, does not have boys !Here is sawaab, experimenting with foam patiently. The silence before the storm ūüôā

and then all the Real Fun began !

Why are “little boys and gooey/messy stuff”, a deadly combination for moms ? You dont have to answer that question. The¬†picture above is the self explanatory answer. Yep ~ hands, feet, clothes and even Buddy’s glasses had foam on them. But, truth be told, I would repeat this activity with the boys, at the drop of a hat. Thats just how much fun they had. How free they felt to mess up. How closer, I found them to myself. All that fun and laughter was well worth the mess. I really had fun just watching and filming them. It was crazy and hilarious !

The activity was : Mixing acrylics in foam lather and making swirls with a skewer stick to leave imprints on A4.

The next day, we worked with colors. Making¬†circles with cup rims and filling watercolors in. Although we were supposed to stick to primary colors. The boys decided they wanted to¬†fill more colors. so voila … you can see the stunning result.

Next, I wanted to check if the children of a craft savvy mom have anything remotely resembling an artistic gene !! Alas !!

Two lessons later, there is remarkable improvement. Needless to say, there is still room for “alot” of improvements ūüôā But we’re getting there, lots of fun and lots of practise, one day at a time.

Notice how both boys have used the eyebrows and movement of lips to distinguish between happy/sad/angry. Not bad for a first timer.

A few tips, a few ideas and alittle coaching later, a good attempt at making a boy’s portrait.¬† For boys who barely ever paint, I think, it was a good attempt. Besides, Like I always say, art is all about the process, not about the result. If the process was fun, then the result is bound to be remarkable.

Feeling more confident. They all wanted to now, make the change and try out a girl’s portrait. Look at those serious faces and all the hard work going into their projects.

And a little later :

Spectacular !!!!!!!

Not only am I so pleased with the beautiful pictures, all the details they put in, but I’m so glad, I got to spend some time ‘WITH THEM’¬†out of the computer studio !!!¬† Most importantly,¬†they are enjoying themselves. I hope, you are¬†inspired¬†from some of these pictures and try out some of the activities with your children. Children forget alot of things but they never forget the time spent with them doing something “they” liked, which does become incredibly difficult as we all age.

I’m so happy that you stopped by, my site. I hope to see you here more often. If you’d like to keep in touch with my posts, you can subsribe to my blog¬†in the column on the right.

Please enjoy making and sharing a little joy over the summer period. Come september and we’ll all be hearing the¬†express train whistling again so enjoy what you have now ~ Time !!! and Time with the kids.

Hugs and kisses to all my friends and subsribers.

God’s Plan.

Hello ladies, Am so delighted that my recycled projects are being so appreciated. I feel a larger sense of accomplishment when one of those projects is completed and even more happier, when they are appreciated. Thank you so much ladies.

I havent really been inspired enough to make cards past couple of weeks. But then, I just wished to use this sentiment for a card and found some similar sketches which it could fit. And now its here  !

I have used yellow, 3 shades of purple, cream and a dot of green brads.  One element that I used after ages is the skeletal leaves. Love those leaves. Had picked them up in my trip to Malaysia, and oh btw, that is one huge haven for crafters !!

This is a male oriented card again ~the color, the design, elements and embellishments. Scallops galore, love the look of the purple cardstock after being embossed {LOVE swirls}, the black and white colored ribbon & bow, was used to add alittle contrast to the card. The key and the lock are such cute charms, arent they ?  The sentiment is a digi stamp.

This is one sentiment, very close to my heart. God has a plan for each one of us. But it is up to us to reach out and fulfill it. Unfortunetly, most of us, sit back and wait for things to “happen”. Does’nt work like that, does it now? Even if you want to win a lottery, you have to make that effort of going out to buy the ticket, isnt it ?¬†

I am certain, this card will lift the spirits of the person receiving it. I know, coz I am a sucker for such senti cards ūüėČ

Well girls, here are the images :
