Craft Room, Dubai, House Moving / New Home, Makeovers

Tour of my Ikea Craft Room !

For the last 4 years, we stayed in the newly developed Al Warqa area of Dubai.

We went from a community living in Arabian Ranches to a stand alone 12,000 sqft villa.

Visit here for my craft room in Arabian Ranches.

What was spectacular about the villa, is that it was designed by an Emarati for an Emarati lifestyle. Whats different about Arabic styled houses ?

Well, Arabic style houses generally have two main entrances to the main building, one for the family, and another one for the male guests. The men guest entrance is greeted by a very large hall which is called the Majlis. This comfortable large space is generally where the men of the family entertain their male friends, hence it is lavishly large.

Another significant thing about the villas’ is that every bedroom is ensuite. Which meant, my 5 bedroom home had 7 bathrooms !!! (1 extra for the lounge room and another for the dining room)

Cleaning such a large house is not for the faint of heart ! But Thank heavens for the abundance of easily available part-time help in Dubai.

Another aspect, which we were lucky, we did not have, is the presence of an entire block of an adjoining building which houses the maids and drivers of the house.

Most of the times, the kitchen is also a part of that building block. But we were lucky, our kitchen was in the main building.

That was too much space for a family of five, however, it would benefit, the constant arrival of relatives and feline friends ( fostering that me and my family volunteer for.)

Thanks to alot of persuasion and prodding – We decided to convert the majlis into my craft Studio.

Was it a dream ??

Absolutely YES !!

For someone who started crafting 12 years back from a modest desk  placed at the  corner of her bedroom … here I was, in a HUGE studio with craft supplies and goodies, I could have only dreamt of years back !!

The studio took nearly three months to be shelved, stacked, stored and organized.

As you will notice from the pictures below, 100% furniture and 95% storage items (like boxes, pots ) are from #Ikea !!

I think, for artists, Ikea is a PERFECT !! They cater to each and every need of ours brillaintly and I have NOT been compensated to state so 🙂

Don’t they look organized ? Even the white pots holding markers are from Ikea.

The large striped boxes as well as the white bookshelf is Ikea.

Was the craft room a  good idea ?

Absolutely !!

How long did it take ?

Very long to organize it all ?

what happened next ?

We moved out of this house this January (2016)  !!!!!!!!

How do I feel about it ?

Miserable !! I miss the sprawling length and breadth of that room so much, so dearly 😦

It was perfect in every way and the  best possible gift, my husband could give me !!

Our new home is in the area called The Villa – Dubailand. Its a modern villa and the added benefit of the majlis is deducted in the form of a pool. We have converted the 5th bedroom into the craft studio – but it is still a project under progress.  Will share with you the development in another post.

I hope you enjoyed my craft studio tour and found inspiration in some of the ways in which I manged to store some supplies.

Hello dear friends !

I’m an erratic blogger 🙂  (But you already know that, by now 😉 )  There have been times when, you could read three posts, back to back and then there are times, when you see me once in three months. In the blog-world, consistency is VERY IMPORTANT.  I am yet to play by the book !

Over the past 11 years, I have been fortunate enough to have a beautiful relationship with any and all forms of art.

I did not restrict myself to water colors or decoupage ~ I am a restless eager soul, I have experienced and enjoyed every craft.

What started from card making has just made it way thru to DIY and home décor.

Sometimes I find myself going on a spin in a perplexed state when ‘newbies’  ask me what I fancy most.

The past 5 months have been remarkably fantastic and have helped me, better define myself.

I cannot thank Almighty Allah swt enough for his grace.

November and December 2014~ were months dedicated to a dozen or more craft fairs. I love fairs and all the planning, preparation and exhaustion, that comes with it !

January 2015 ~ Gulf News published an article about me and my work !  I was beside myself.

January 2015 ~ We completed a 3-Day Art and Craft workshop.

February 2015 ~ Organic Café and Foods Supermarket, displayed my handmade greeting cards.

February 2015 ~ Aspen House Gifts, got the much needed boost it so anticipated, with several baby shower favors and wedding favors orders.

March 2015 – I was requested to be chief guest at the Arts and design Faculty of the American University of Dubai. It was an honor beyond words !

Over the years, I have been blessed to accomplish, all the creative adventures, I dive into, thanks to Allah swt and a lot of patience from my better half and boys. However, there are times, when I question myself, if I am, more of a mixed media artist, or a craft teacher or a carpenter, a card maker or a business woman or a DIY enthusiast. Perhaps, the past 5 months, have given me a glimpse of all who I am.

An amalgamation of all these endeavors.

Today, Let me share with you alittle about Aspen House Gifts.

Dubai is an exceptional city. It is as modern as can be yet, adherently holds to its cultural roots. Arabs, have been known thru out history for their strong traditions and hospitality.

Aspen House Gifts was initiated alittle over a year ago, as a gateway to introducing the latest, most innovative and personalized party favors, party supplies, corporate gifts  and one-of-a-kind personalized keepsakes.

We personalize party favors and custom-design gifts to suit our clients personality and requirements.

I trust you will help spread the word in the blog-world and ‘like’ our facebook page too.

Having a creative background gives me an edge in designing, understanding color statements, and packaging and having been in Dubai for 22 years, procuring my supplies is relatively easier for me.

Three of the key principles, I adopted from the hospitality industry, for over a decade are, professional attitude, punctuality and exemplary presentation.

Here is a collage of some of our creative assingments :-

I’m glad that I was fortunate enough to share with you something personal and something professionally about me.

20 Ways to recycle fancy carry bags/shopping bags.

Hello friends. I’m so glad your visiting me today. How have you been ?

If you’re visiting me, having read the title of this post, then naturally, your a craft or a recycling enthusiast. Either ways, I am so happy to share some of my ideas with you.

Two things that are found in abundance after any seasonal holiday, are, carry bags and wrapping papers. As a nature lover, I find myself investing a lot of my time, energy and creativity around, recycling, reusing and upcycling things. There can be nothing but gains out of this initiative.

Today, I am sharing a very simple idea with you.  My children take my craft studio for granted !! They assume that any and every art related supply can be provided on a 24 hourly basis ~ free of charge ~ in my studio !! Hence, finding them snooping around in the studio at odd hours, looking for a special design paper, or a fine nib sharpie, does not surprise me anymore. What’s more, I almost expect them to arrive at the 11th hour, in need of some ‘urgent’ help for a school project !!

Such was the case of my youngest, who, comes in late one evening looking for a large craft sheet for a Ronald Dahl project. I did not have one at my disposal but I noticed I had 2 large carry bags from a baby store,  which could fit the bill. A little trimming here and there, a few snips and we had our very colorful chart ready.

Its not something extravagant. Its something very simple which cost, virtually NOTHING !!  His classmates never realized that it was just a carry bag turned into a chart paper. (until he pointed it out to them)  I am glad, that the few students in his class, now realize, that they too, don’t need to dump large, fancy carry-bags.

They too can use it in numerous ways.  If nothing else, Paper bags can be recycled with other paper items, making them as easy to recycle as tossing them in the bin or taking them to a collection center.

20 ways with carry bags

Ronald Dahl school project

I have turned this carry bag into a chart paper for a project. However, because, these carry bags use a sturdy quality of paper so as to carry things, their general quality can serve various other uses too. For instance :-

You can :-

  • Cut bits of these in various shapes and stick it to your pencils, as pencil poppers
  • Use them to cover journals or autograph books or even book binding
  • Cut and stick large heart and star shapes onto a straw and gift it to your class friends etc
  • Cut small pieces and make a collage out of it.
  • Make a flip book from them.
  • Cut thin strips and use in quilling projects
  • Cut long and large sheets and make bookmarks from them
  • With the help of a paper punch, cut designs and use as a sticker.
  • There are several youtube videos to show you how to make small boxes with sturdy and glossy paper.
  • You could also make a simple envelope with them.
  • Making hats, calls for sturdy chart paper, replace it with our very-own-carry bag !!
  • You can also use them in crafts like puppet-making
  • Or make large colorful flowers for a wreath !
  • Why not make a pin-wheel with this excellent material !

Another important aspect to remember is, that the cord handle of these bags are so useful too !!!

  • Attach a bell or a feather and turn it into a cat toy
  • Glue some of them into a round coil shape and you have a lovely embellishment for your cards etc
  • You could also hot glue some of them in a coil shape and attach it to a hair pin
  • Use them in string art
  • Glue them on a toilet roll and get your little ones to use it as a painting accessory for textures.

These are just a few ways of recycling fancy carry bags, but I’m certain, there are dozens more ways of recycling which I haven’t thought off !  Please share with me your efforts in recycling too.

Football Fan.

Hello Everybody.

Thank you . Thank you Thank you Thank you so much for all your lovely comments on both the 3 cupcakes as well as the best bud card. Truly, it is so nice to have a circle of like minded friends who also understand issues like dental phobias and what not ! Its so nice be sourrounded in all the warmth of your comments, ladies. So please do keep shooting me those thoughtful comments 🙂

The card today is an all out and out male card. Infact, it would be more suited to a young male fella or even a kid. I know, eversince Mr Mojo has returned, he has also placed a spell over me for the color aquamarine and sky blue. Both the stamps here are digital stamps. The cutsie football player is from Nikki over at Melon Headz and the other ticket stamp is from … oops I forget !  Dear friends, many a times, if I am unable to remember whom the stamp belongs to, kindly let me know and I will be glad to give her credit for it.  The sentiment is placed in a tag, while some martha stewart border punch has lined the printed DP. I really like playing with the banner ideas. Here I have just glued on some buttons to the banner. Relatively simple card with a very clean look. Hope you guys appreciate it too. Here is the image :

I know I have a strong vote for this card, coz my 9 year old has already requested me to make a similar frame without the birthday sentiment for him ! Well, I hope you guys like it too.

Till we meet next time.

This is Naush thanking you for popping over and leaving your feedback for me.

God’s Plan.

Hello ladies, Am so delighted that my recycled projects are being so appreciated. I feel a larger sense of accomplishment when one of those projects is completed and even more happier, when they are appreciated. Thank you so much ladies.

I havent really been inspired enough to make cards past couple of weeks. But then, I just wished to use this sentiment for a card and found some similar sketches which it could fit. And now its here  !

I have used yellow, 3 shades of purple, cream and a dot of green brads.  One element that I used after ages is the skeletal leaves. Love those leaves. Had picked them up in my trip to Malaysia, and oh btw, that is one huge haven for crafters !!

This is a male oriented card again ~the color, the design, elements and embellishments. Scallops galore, love the look of the purple cardstock after being embossed {LOVE swirls}, the black and white colored ribbon & bow, was used to add alittle contrast to the card. The key and the lock are such cute charms, arent they ?  The sentiment is a digi stamp.

This is one sentiment, very close to my heart. God has a plan for each one of us. But it is up to us to reach out and fulfill it. Unfortunetly, most of us, sit back and wait for things to “happen”. Does’nt work like that, does it now? Even if you want to win a lottery, you have to make that effort of going out to buy the ticket, isnt it ?

I am certain, this card will lift the spirits of the person receiving it. I know, coz I am a sucker for such senti cards 😉

Well girls, here are the images :

Alter Art, Altered Wall hanging, Challenges, Friendship cards, Love messages ~ cards, Mother, Recyling, Reuse, Reduce., Trash to Treasure

Right here for you.. .. .. .. wall hanging

This too, is from the trash to wall hanging series. It is the white board which was found dumped on the construction site. You may have to read my post, ” Mother ~ Wall hanging” , to get the full story on it. In short, it is recycled sheets that I have dressed up.

A very simple idea and concept is used. Have always liked the idea of using a fish bowl, although I dont approve of an animals or birds being caged or living in an aquarium 😦  ~~ Thats just not their place. Again, thats us, humans being selfish and self centered.

Such strong shades of blue and Orange are not exactly what I am comfortable with, but sometimes, when you actually work with it, somehow they look good when placed together. Both are handmade papers. The fishes are fabric. Some glitter for the bubbles, 3 brown buttons knotted with a yellow twine,  a simple but comforting sentiment, which is a digi stamp. The board is held up by  a satin orangish ribbon. I have made a deliberate effort at avoiding any flowery embellishments, becoz as always, I prefer the less-cluttered look.  Simplicity is always more striking and attractive.

Ladies, I would really like to take a moment here, to thank you all for all those loving comments that you leave behind for me. They are so encouraging. WOULD you believe, I feel, more inspired, to try out more, to try out different, to try out my best, becoz of those heartfelt comments. Thank you ladies. It means alot.
