Tutorial -How to upcycle wooden puzzle blocks?

What do you do when some of your puzzle blocks are missing ?

What do I do ?

Why ofcourse, I upcycle them. But naturally  .. Problem solved !

1

My oldest son is extremely fond of solving puzzles. However with 2 younger brothers around him who enjoy tossing puzzles pieces more than joining them together .. the older one has had it difficult and puzzle blocks go missing. ūüė¶

Inspite of being incomplete, I kept them packed away for the longest time, until recently, when I decided to give them a makeover. (Its just NOT in my nature, to toss them out ūüôā )

So here is a simple pictorial of the transformation.

I gently, wiped these blocks with a slightly damp rag.puzzle block makeover 3

Then applied two coats of indigo acrylic, on all sides of the blocks.

When the diecut machine is in progress, I like to cut a bunch of flowers, which i store in egg trays like this :upcycle egg tray to organizer

I found some diecuts that fit perfectly in the squarespuzzle block upcycle

I destressed the edges of the diecuts and stamped the letters which spelt FAMILY on one side and BE MINE on the other side.

So how do you like it ?

Isn’t it really easy ?

I continue to share projects that can inspire my friends and readers with ways to reuse/recycle/repurpose/upcycle household items.

Every decision starts with a very small but firm, first step. I hope you embrace the idea of recycling or repurposing this year.

If you have been recycling already,  I would love to read some of your ideas for eco friendly crafts too.

I am sharing this simple project with my blog buddies  here .

I’m delighted that you stopped by.  You can subscribe to my blog to read all my posts and projects.

I hope you stay a while and leave inspired.

Tutorial – DIY desk organizer

Hello friends,

upcycle can stationery organizer 0

Two important aspects of any crafters life is inspiration and storage !!¬† And somehow both these two aspects seem to go hand in hand. Although I “think’ I breeze through, even in a cluttered chaos, I know, I would be much more productive¬† in a more organized set up, where all my tools and supplies are easily accessible.

I am a visual person – I need my tools to be seen, so as to be able to use them. A punch which is tucked away in one of my bins, generally does NOT get played with – AT ALL ūüė¶

So these past weeks, i used up most of my “recyclable stock pile” and made a few desk organizers.

I hope you enjoy this pictorial and find some inspiration to use up those cans lying around in the kitchen.

Clean cans thoroughly and organize them in a rectangular or circular manner.

Although i have brush – painted two coats of acrylic colors on these cans, I would recommend spray paint cans

upcycle can stationery organizer 14

Decide in which order, you’d like to place the cans.

Upcycle Can Stationery Organizer 13
Gather the cans together and glue them together on the sides where they meet each other

The 1 kg yoghurt bucket, comes with a white handle which fit in, snugly in the middle container, so that I could be lifted.
Upcycle Can Stationery Organizer 10
So as to enforce them together, I wrapped them with a large ribbon. You can use any fabric, ribbon or even jute or twine. I also adhered this lovely frill ribbon from Daiso, on the edge.

I am using the lid of the cookie box as the base of the organizer.  I used STRONG STIK glue to stick the cans to the base. It is a remarkable glue, which I bought from Creative Minds.

I was not quite satisfied with the ribbon, hence I added two thinner orange ribbons on the border to give it a more defined look.

This silver stand had not been used in decades, so it was more than happy with its new found job role !!¬† It provided a much needed height and was quite stable. We don’t want a stand that could topple all the contents.¬†

And there you have it !

I love how all my promarkers, copics and paint markers are all now easily accessible. Its such a huge relief and joy.

I’m inspired to make a few more of these to house my scissors and paintbrushes etc.

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this frugal creation.

Recycled objects :-

  • Food cans
  • lid from cookie tin.
  • Serving stand.

Upcycle A Broken Mirror

” Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !! “

Some of my favorite words are, create, creativity, craft, upcycle and repurpose !          What are yours ?

UPCYCLE THE MIRROR TO DISPLAY JEWELRY (1)

Like I explained in my previous post, I have been designing jewelry.   We held two trunk shows, and I found that we were short of display units for my leather jewelry collection.

Alittle scavenging into our shed, and my trusted wingman was back with a full size narrow mirror that we had dumped in there, a few years back !!¬† I bet your asking why I stored a broken mirror stand, right ?¬† My husband asks that ALL THE TIME !!!¬† I’ll give you the reply, I give him – We’ll find a use for it someday. (not that he ever believes me ūüôā )¬† But for once – THAT DAY, finally came !!

Obviously, the stand looked worn out but I decided, to keep the shabby chic distress look on the white border, but paint the cork board, within.

newestDSC_6774JPG

The diehard optimist in me, only noticed that the wood was sturdy and the size was perfect to hold as many as 40 pairs of earings !!

newDSC_6775JPG (1)

A couple of coats of paint should do the trick.

newDSC_6778JPG

I  mixed some white acrylic to a pastel shade of peach and pink to get this color.

newestDSC_6777JPGnewDSC_6782JPG (2)

A dozen or so nails on the side to hang the strings at and voila ! We have a display unit to hang our jewelry – from TRASH !!!

newDSC_6784JPG

Absolutely in love with this¬† piece !! Not only did I design the jewelry but I also designed the jewelry display stand !!!! ūüôā

Repurposed Bedside table to a CAT TREE / Tower.

Hello friends. My last post was about the cat tree that I built with some left over wood.

You already know, there¬†¬†is no dearth of cats in my home as well as¬†outside my home. Hence,¬†‘ONE’ cat tree/scratching post is not going to suffice all our needs. ¬†I’m always on the look out¬† for stuff that can be improvised/repurposed/upcycled and used as a cat home or shelter.

Summers in Dubai can be rather cruel. The stray cats around the house, find protection from the scorching heat under cars or the few trees in our area.

I knew that this summer, I wanted to provide Charlie and Oreo, the¬†kittens¬†outside our yard, a safe space to hide in the afternoon.¬†¬†The first cat tree had been quite a hit with all my fur babies and it was time to try out something different and better !¬† God helps those who help themselves couldn’t be far from¬†reality in this case. I found this red bed side table and knew¬†instantly, this was my answered prayer.

That afternoon, I got to work on it ~ ofcourse with my super helpful¬†sons (those lovely boys who are constantly lending a hand to their madly creative mom ūüė¶¬† )

DSCF6047
So this is how we found it. We removed the leftover drawer and the steel rails too.
DSCF6044
The table was sturdy but missing two drawers. My base had to be very strong so that when the cats jumped on the higher levels, it shouldn’t knock the base and this easily qualified it.

DSCF6070
Ofcourse, I dived into my pile of wood and pallets and came up with some pallet wood which was then cut to equal size and glued and nailed to a large piece of thin cork wood. (the kind that forms the back of Ikea Billy bookcases )

DSCF6071

DSCF6072
After gluing and nailing all four wood supports, I cut an MDF wood similar in size to the one already used with the same dimensions.
DSCF6074
We then drilled 2/3 screws into the MDF and adhered it the four supports. My son is hammering some nails on the corners for extra strength, This guy is my wing man ūüôā
DSCF6075
……..and its already turned night ūüė¶ We nailed the thin side of the ‘trunk’ onto the side table. Then we stapled the pieces of left over carpet onto the two, bases, above.
DSCF6007
Ofcourse we do have a quality inspector, without who’s consent, the product is not released forward ūüôā
DSCF6005
Voila !!! There you have it !!

I stapled a tiny cat toy, made with some yarn ~ Just to lure them into trying out the new ‘hangout’
DSCF6011
My youngest had it trolleyed to the main gate. That’s my Dad in the background. He’s one of my biggest inspirations, whom I have watched for years, churning out amazing projects.
DSCF6379
Found its resting place close to the gate.

That’s Sofu, sharpening his nails on the carpet ~ exactly like I wanted him to do with it !!

Second level # checked !! Miski has given her approval too ūüôā

I love it when a project works out as¬†I had envisioned it.¬† I am happy to report that the cat tree/watch tower has survived for the last three months but is inhabited totally by Pepper – my Tom. He has laid his claim on the watch tower. Its his throne becoz its placed at the point of entry into the house. He guards the house from¬†atop¬†the tower !!!¬† There are times, when I believe, there is a¬†watch dog somewhere inside Pepper¬†and at other times, I convince myself that he’s just a very very very territorial Tom.

What started out as an attempt to make Charlie and Oreo comfortable, turned out to be Pepper’s new turf. Oh well, that just means, I have to work on another cat tree in the near future ūüôā

I am linking this cat tree idea to the following link parties here.

Garden Makeover 2 ~ Transforming garden accessories

The first part of this make-over were my initial attempts at making the Concrete Mushrooms which made very attractive pieces scattered in the lawn.

Frankly,¬†when I begin¬†any art or craft or diy¬†project, I don’t have a clear picture of what the outcome “look” would be, but when the finished “look” is close to good, taking all those pictures and making notes etc,¬†of when it was being processed, becomes so worth the while.

I love making tutorials. Its my way of sharing some joy with my readers and it gives me a great sense of achievement when someone finds inspiration, by something, I shared.  So a BIG THANK YOU to all of you, my dear readers, who appreciated and encouraged me with your lovely comments for the CONCRETE MUSHROOMS !

Back to the Garden Makeover :- The other improvements included giving a facelift to some of the accessories that have been an integral part of the garden for several years.

In a country where most old¬†items and furniture are chugged out easily¬†~¬†I don’t like the idea of dumping “things” if there is considerable “life” left in it. I prefer to give mine alittle TLC,¬† some shine and hopefully some better days ahead for them.

PicMonkey Collage0

Dubai receives some very harsh treatment from the Sun for a good 5-6 months. It can become incredibly unbearable for any idle object to sit in an outdoor area and soak up the direct sunlight with temperatures running anywhere between 45* Р49*Celcius for hours, endlessly.  Most of our garden chairs, glass tables, benches and accessories bear the brunt of the merciless Sun.

So this October, I armed myself with some sanding paper and a couple of cans of spray paint and “got my sons to do the needful” !!!!

PicMonkey Collage

The bench was a real sore eye ! So my oldest got around to sanding it with the sanding machine. I cannot emphasis just how important sanding is for wood or anything rusted as well. It is time consuming but it almost renews life into these pieces, let alone the smoothness achieved.  Each one of the boys, took turns to paint a couple of coats of white paint on the bench.

Two days later ~ we had a beautiful white “shabby chic looking” bench !!

DSCF6079

DSCF6080

These Ikea lanterns had gotten so rusty and ugly that it was incredibly difficult to sand the nooks and cranny of these lanterns. But¬†I wasn’t ready to present¬†them to the garbage bin ūüôā¬† ~¬† I think, the boys did a good job considering its previous hideous state.

DSCF6090

Not bad ~ what say ?

DSCF6092

I have used this tray earlier to display some seashells ~ I have something else planned up for it this time round ūüôā

DSCF6052

What a drastic change, isn’t it ?

DSCF6084

These lantern stands have been a part of my garden for quite a few years and had undergone transformations earlier too, but I think, I like this one much  better :-

DSCF6053

Needless to say, just how gross the stands look !! and how pretty the transformation turned out !

DSCF6082

Last but not the least, we bought these lovely pine cones from out trip to England last summer. I spray painted it with silver color (I know it looks like white but it is silver)

DSCF6085 DSCF6086

So there you have it !! A little facelift can make a huge difference. I was trying to add up all the little transformations that I had made, to bring about a sense of aesthetics and charm in the garden and porch.

Please tell me which transformation is the best  ( in your opinion) :-

  1. the bench
  2. the lanterns
  3. the stand
  4. the pinecones

I  would like to share my makeovers with the following friends and their lovely blog parties :-
