Romantic Style Mantle Decor

Hello friends,

You know I belong to a generation ( Dinosaur period ) where, we jotted down dates on the “Calender” and remembered birthdays of friends, family members and relatives (religiously) and posted greeting cards to them, if they lived abroad, atleast 10 days in advance (postal journey time)

If they stayed in the same city, then “REAL”  efforts were made to call them, make them feel special, buy a pretty gift along with a greeting card for them.  Things were really simple.  Brands were really not something, people thought too much about. Its the thought that matters – is the ideology, I was bought up on.

We had never even heard of Teachers day.  Fathers day and Mothers day were the only ‘special days’ we were acquainted with.

I remember,  I was in Grade 8, mid 1980s, when one of my friends, who had just returned from holidays in USA, got me a sticker set of fruits which when rubbed, gave off the whiff of bananas, grapes, oranges and lemon and a greeting card for Valentines day.

Valentines day was unheard of in those days, in Kuwait.

Naturally, not having Google around – meant we got ALL our information from books.

I don’t ever remember reading about any valentines day occasion anywhere, but the concept seemed interesting. Especially since we were at an impressionable age where every “long gaze” from the opposite sex, was considered as a ‘crush’ 🙂

Valentines day just gave us all, school-goers, an excuse to share our feelings with our friends.  Those were also the days of silly slam books !! Did you have those ?

Truly, those were simple days.  Innocent times with no complications like today.

Fast forward to 2019, I find all these barrage of ‘special days’ just a waste.  These are reduced to just occasions glorified by the Hallmark -kinda -industries to capitalize on !

There is a long queue of these willy-nilly day declaring including some like,  World television day,  International day of happiness, World toilet day – Its bizarre due to the fact that more than two billion people don’t have access to proper sanitation.

Having said that, i strongly support any month or day, which brings about awareness of any disease or disorder or mental health state.  I have always been an avid supporter for the Breast Cancer month & Autism awareness month

However, I don’t think, we really need a special day to remind our loved ones, how precious they are, how much we value them. My husband taught me, It should be a gesture we provide in our every day-to-day life.

After a recent exhibition, we returned home totally exhausted. I was bone tired and slumped on the couch, barely able to raise my feet.  It took two long days of arduous efforts in setting up and dismantling, not one but two stalls for the exhibition.

We decided to leave all the supplies and exhibition material in the car and off load it the following day.  I knew all the boys were drained as well hence two of them hit the sack as soon as we got home, but one of my sons, decided to take the reins in his hands and managed to quietly offload the entire load out of the car, all by himself !!

Not only that, he also fed all 11 of our cats – while I was barely cooling off my heals and wondering how I would walk to the kitchen to feed the cats !!  These are those little acts of thoughtfulness that carry the reward of mountains in them.

Needless to say, when I did finally pluck myself off the couch from my trans-like zombie state, i realized what he had done for us.  I showered him with hugs and my blessings when I found out, how much he went above and beyond the call the duty.

These are things that leave a mark.  These are little acts that speak louder than any wrapped up gift.

Coming back to today’s post. . .

For those of you, who may be looking for Valentines day, decor ideas, here’s a small happy and romantic mantle decor which I put together.

Tutorial – Felt Phone Pouch

Hello Friends.

I’m back with a fun and funky felt pouch tutorial.

felt pouch tutorial (8)

In my previous post, I shared, how we can make hair accessories, jewelry as well as book marks with felt, so today, we’ll see how we can design a fun felt case or pouch for the mobile phone.

Ofcourse, you can use these pouches to carry anything apart from phones as well.

You can also gift it your friends as valentines gift or mothers day gift or even teachers day gifts.

I must confess, I am quite a novice at sewing.  The only thing, I can sew is fallen off buttons !! But I decided to break the curse 😉 and give it a try.

The black pouch was the first one I sewed so the irregularities in the stitches, are pretty obvious, but I think, I got the hang of it by the time, I started the second (blue) pouch.

So I started with a rectangle shape, after measuring my phone dimensions and . . . .

I know, the sewing is far from good but i think, with the next pouch, I tried the blanket stitch and turned out looking great.

Bonus tutorial of how to make a tassel !!!

I could not have taken more photos while tying the tassel since I’d need more than 2 hands !

I’m delighted with these pouches.  My mobiles sit perfectly in them.

I have added two quilled flowers ( tutorial here) in the blue pouch. I distressed the flowers with some (Tim Holtz) Rangers Distress ink.

I think the pictorial is pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it ?

I hope you liked it and might consider attempting a felt creation !

Upcycle Pizza Box

Hello creative buddies !

Pizza Hut take away boxes are one of my favorite materials to use as canvases and shadow box frames.

Here are some of my other takes on the previous pizza box projects :

https://doodlebuddies.net/2011/06/15/gift-box-pizza-box-recycled/

Today, I have used ring-pulls to design a heart shape on a pizza box. I love playing with texture and these ring pulls add a unique texture to the project.  I have used a gold matt spray paint finish to subdue the rings.

The process was longer than expected but the end result was well-worth it.

* I did not have to go scavenging for ring pulls since I already collect them and have a huge pile of ring pulls and lids so they come in handy, for such projects.

How did you find this project ?

I continue to share projects that can inspire my friends and readers with ways to reuse/recycle/repurpose/upcycle household items.

Every decision starts with a very small but firm, first step. I hope you embrace the idea of recycling or repurposing this year.

If you have been recycling already,  I would love to read some of your ideas for eco friendly crafts too.

I am sharing this simple project with my blog buddies  here .

DIY Tutorial – Upcycle Broken Frame

I love to salvage ‘stuff’.  I, almost always find inspiration ‘especially’ in broken items.  Unfortunately that also means, that alot of broken items don’t land up in the rubbish bin immediately in my home. (as they should) eg Broken mugs are stored to be used as mosaic material

Would you believe this frame was an empty shell with no base/back or glass infront and now — Ta da !!

we will help you

This frame was found in one of my frame piles and I decided to FINALLY work some of my magic on it.

upcycle broken frame 1

I absolutely love the HOPE sign below, but one of our new fosters (kitten) jumped high enough, to break it.

upcycle broken frame 8

Like I said, its not THAT EASY for things to be chugged in the bin – – –   at my place !!

(the fact that my husband and sons are fed up of my habit is another story for another day though  )

Long story short –

I decided somehow the HOPE sign and the frame would look good together. Here’s a simple tutorial of what followed.

upcycle broken frame 2
The frame did not need to be sanding, so I proceeded with two coats of acrylic paint.
upcycle broken frame 3
Found this light weight, foam backing for the base/back. The frame had hooks intact on the back so I measured the black foam and cut to fit in the back of the frame.
upcycle broken frame 6
For the background, I got some cardboard and painted colors – colors that are generally out of my comfort zone eg yellow, purple, blue !
upcycle broken frame 5
I applied some DAP instant Grab adhesive to glue the two broken spaces on the HOPE letters.
upcycle broken frame 7
Let it rest for atleast 12 -14 hours.
collage art 1
Having painted stripes of cardboard, I went on to roughly place the stripes on the black base foam board to see how the pattern looked.
collage art 2
I decided, I did not want a symmetrical pattern and wanted a random distressed look . I snipped the excess cardboard which had exceeded the black foam’s border.
collage art 3
I measured and placed smaller pieces of cardboard on the empty edges
collage art 7
Then I hot glued all the pieces along with regular PVA glue for additional strength.
collage art 8
Finally I placed the frame over and adhered it from behind.

  • I wanted to give a 3D effect to the sign hence I added a piece of cardboard on the back of the HOPE sign at two places and hot glued the sign to the colorful background.   That way, it gives a popping out impression.
  • I have added random thin golden paint strokes to conceal the spots where it had broken – in turn giving it a more marble-like effect.
  • It is necessary to give one coat of modge podge or varnish on the entire frame and background – so as to make it more durable and it will be easy to clean it in future too (from dust etc since it does not have a glass covering)

I absolutely love how this turned out.  Did you like it too ??

I am sharing this post with my lovely blog buddies here.

Really glad you dropped by today.

Hope you  have a bright and happy day.

New Year at the Worlds Tallest Tower.

Hello friends.

For all those of you who are celebrating New Year, I pray we all have a blessed, peaceful and creative New Year.

2

I am a Muslim and we follow the Lunar calendar hence our New Year is 1st of Hijri. However, for our day to day practical purposes we refer to the Gregorian calendar.

An occasion or holiday that gives us a chance to be together is cherished.

So, How did you welcome the New Year ?

We are blessed to live in the City that houses the worlds tallest tower, so where best to be at, but The Burj Khalifa !!

burj khalifa dubai

The fireworks were phenomenal, infact, Burj Khalifa also set the record for the longest LED light display on New Years eve.  Ho boy !! It was brilliant.

burj khalifa dubai 2

Ofcourse, entry on Sheikh Zayed road and Financial center road, closed from 10:30 pm.

new year in dubai 1new year in dubai 5Cars were double parked on Al Khail road. But around 11:00 pm we realized, the authorities were moving people out from parking on the side-path of highway so we drove towards a construction site on the opposite side and had a fabulous view from there.

new year in dubai 2

Needless to say we were not the only smart ones there !!

People had come prepared with flood lights, carpets, tents etc.

new year in dubai 3

We had carried our tables, chairs, blankets and pizzas.

What absolute bliss.

Any occasion is an opportunity to share some special moments with the people who matter the most to you, tolerate you the most and appreciate you the most.

Good health, sound mind and the bliss of a happy family – How can anything be more precious ?

1Different people celebrate in different ways. How did you welcome the New Year ?

Christmas Decor – Upcycle a photo frame to a wreath.

Thinking out- of- the- box comes naturally to some, while some of us have to figure out this  thought process.

Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath

I’ve made several frame projects and plenty of wreaths, however, this time, I’m creating a mix of the two !

Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath
Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath
I love baubles – But who doesn’t  ??
Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath
I took a few baubles of various sizes and hot glued them on the back of a picture frame which had a damaged glass. Naturally it was a perfect candidate for my experiment 🙂
Upcycle the photo frame to make a wreath
The once sad and damaged frame, now has a renewed function ( and friends) !!  It poses in style with its new buddies.

This ikea frame had a similar story 🙂

The mantle is complete.

For those of you who visit me regularly, already know, by now, that nothing gives me more pleasure than breathing a new lease of life into old, damaged goods.   Most of my frames are bought at Ikea as is section,  Pan Emirates or  garage sales.   Its a shame that here, in Dubai, we have places where we can donate our clothes, shoes or even books – but there aren’t any places like the  charity stores in the West.  So most of us put up garage sales or join the only flea market available here 😦

What do you do with broken or damaged frames ?

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this easy and festive creation.

Recycled objects :-

  • Damaged photo frames
  • Previous years baubles
  • Old bows
