Recycle pizza box AND toilet rolls tutorial !!

Hello friends !! I am super duper happy today !! Why ? I have a hundred reasons to be grateful and a million reasons to be happy for, but for now, two main reasons are popping up the most ~ for all the joy !!

Reason 1:- Today, Allah swt blessed me with 42 years of a blessed and beautiful life ~ He included the best husband and the most caring and awesome children in that life and as if that was not enough, He placed immense creativity in it !! We tend to take health for granted, until something goes wrong ~ but I thank Almighty Allah EVERYDAY for keeping the cancer at bay ~ If that’s not worth being happy about, then what is ??

Reason 2:- I was initially disappointed when my pizza box, { recycled to the shadow box }, did not get qualified for the shadow box competition (Read all about it here) but in my heart, I was very content if not excited with what I had designed. For me, creativity is something that has to be functional and appeasing. And I know, I felt I was really happy with how the pizza box turned out ~ infact, the whole episode inspired me to draw up more plans in different ways to work on several pizza boxes and I really went to town with all the stuff I came up with !!

Now that feeling is deep satisfaction with what you have drawn, designed and created ~ but happy ? Happy came becoz of the immense response I got from friends and fellow craftsmen who poured their love and appreciation in their comments on that post . It bought so much joy that people really liked how that shadow box turned out, but it amazed me “how many” creative friends thought that way.

I suppose, it just goes to show that CREATIVE people mostly THINK OUT OF THE BOX !!!

Thank you ~ thank you ~ thank you ~ so much to all the wonderful friends who visited me and left your kind words of encouragement. You’ll see the result of that encouragement in the next few posts !! Hopefully, you’ll like those too.

Today, I am sharing another one of my creations from the pizza box. I have seen a few projects on Pinterest, where toilet rolls have been used to make a lovely design around mirrors or clocks and that sparked an idea of incorporating the same technique into a shadow box made (pizza box)

Thrift, frugal, repurpose, DIY are words that really grab my interest. In this project, I merged two recycled items. The pizza box and the toilet rolls !!

Fotor07150011trpb

It is really a very simple and straight forward project. I have tried to make this project more pictorial so I think, it is quite self explanatory.

With this box, I decided, not to tamper or alter the frame of the box. It remains a pretty bright red. I did not add paint to the inside base of the box either ~ instead I adhered some bright green embossed pattern paper (contrasting to the red frame) to it. So if you have oil marks on the base or side, don’t worry ~ it wont show up in the final look. Fotor071714395process Fotor0717145244process2 Fotor0717145935process3

And finally, here it is, in broad day light ! I admit, I have been quite clumsy and slack ~ I haven’t cleared up the tiny strings of hot glue around the petals which is tarnishing the close up look 😦

Fotor071501136trpb

Like I said, earlier, its only when, I got around to editing the pictures, did I realize I should have worked harder for a better finishing ! After all, camera lens tend to magnify all the goof ups, in the highest of proportions !!!

Its really a super easy project which you can get your kids involved in too. I hope you liked the tutorial and if you’ll like to keep updated with all my projects, kindly “subscribe” to my blog by pressing the blue icon on the top left side.

Pizza box turned to Shadow box !

Two weeks back, I participated in one of these creative group challenges on facebook. They asked to work on some form of altered art on a shadow box. Naturally everyone participating, rushed to Ikea to pick shadow boxes worth dhs 30 ! Frugal me instead, decided to improvise. We have a tradition in our home of having a pizza party every Friday afternoon. My husband loves to pamper the boys on the one day he is at home with us. ( That minus the almost 5 other days, we have a meal out !)

Since Pizza Hut’s meal for four has two medium size boxes, I generally don’t dispose those boxes after the meal. They get stacked up in my new white cupboard which stocks all “recycleable ” stuff like cat food tins/cans, pringle tubes, empty toilet rolls and what have you ! You get the idea, don’t you !! Yes, very few things find their way into the bin in this house 🙂 I suppose, Dubai Muncipality should be appreciating my efforts to keep a recycling center right IN my house !! 🙂

Anyways, back to the story :- So naturally I turn to the pizza box and try to envision the transformation !! Strangely, its really not so difficult to make at all !

Here’s the process :-

I measured a large square on the back or base of the box { it is more sturdy since it gets additional support from the three adjoining sides } almost 1 inch away from the edge on all four sides. Make a crease on that line so that cutting thru it will be easier. Then cut thru the measured square on all four sides with a sharp blade. I used my steel ruler/scale to give me direction and support. BTW, this particular project did not use a pizza hut box instead it is of another pizza company.

DSCF2079

Once the face/base of the box was cut off, I then measured a large 12 x 12 scrapbooking paper as per the dimensions of the inside of the box. Applied some white glue to the paper and adhered it to the box inside.

DSCF2078

This is the stage where the box is now ready for all the decoration to drop on it. Let the designing begin !

DSCF2080

Since I had a rough idea of how I wanted it to look, I divided the box into four parts. The top being the largest while the below had three nearly equal parts. It was divided by a black polka dot ribbon on top and black thin left-over cardstock. Strangely enough, this is the part that took the longest and I made a couple of goof ups here !!

DSCF2081

I had planned to keep the theme romantic, hence I distressed some blue wooden alphabets spelling “Love” and glued them haphazardly on the top half of the box. Later I cut three heart shapes out of a story book paper and gently glued them together in the center. I then glued the hearts on the boxes in the below part. I repeated this process twice for the other two parts as well.

DSCF2082

I made spiral flowers out of some left over papers and adhered them with hot glue towards the top right side of the “love sign” and the bottom left side too. Some small flowers were also glued for an added effect.

DSCF2083

For the frame look of the shadow box. I measured and cut four stripes of patterned paper and attached it to the “frame” !

and ……….. Voila !!

<a

href=”https://doodlebuddies.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/dscf2139_2.jpg”>DSCF2139_2

It took less than an 1 1/2 hour to finish this entire project and apart from the wooden alphabets, I am sure, everyone carries almost all of the said items in their homes !

So ? What’d you think ? I really hope, I have inspired some one out there. to try out something similar !!

Please feel free to tell me how you liked my ‘ pizza box turned shadow box’ . Oh yeah, my creativity and thinking out of the box, did cost me !! Sadly, the challenge was for a shadow box and they disapproved the transformation of the pizza box to the shadow box !!! They decided they did not want to accept anything less than a prim and proper shadow box !!

So I licked my wounds and then licked some more, for a couple of days and later, pushed my disappointments into making a whole lot of more pizza boxes into shadow boxes ! !! Folks, that’s Naush for you !!! Down but not for long :)))

Frankly, I had a lot of fun, visualizing, then designing, then goofing up, then re-designing, and then actually improving and making it work for me !! Challenge or not ~ competition or not ~ I am happy with my little project. How about you ?

Have you ever been let down by some silly rule of any challenge after making a real effort to participate ? I mean, everyone is always talking about thinking out of the box these days, well I literally did think “out of the box” and guess where it got me !!! 🙂

Have a beautiful day friends and thank you so much for visiting me today.

DIY Cupcake stand Tutorial.

Thank you to all of you who visited me and left lovely messages of encouragement in my last post about that amazing PVC storage solution for Paper. Cardboard can be a crafters best friend ! And if the words, upcycle, recycle, reuse, repurpose, sound like music to your ears, then this project will really excite you. This post is about a Cup Cake stand that I made out of cardboards, lying around in the house. I have used a sturdy double corrugated cardboard. Used three different sizes of round objects to make the various round shapes. ( Including the large clock in my studio.) When we moved into this house, the movers had used these huge rolls of plastic to cover most of the furniture which was rolled over a thick heavy circular pole. DSCF2054 DSCF2055 Next, I used my electrical jigsaw to cut the pole, which can be quite tricky since you want to get a clean cut so that the stand does not wobble, once the weight is placed on it. I got two pieces of equal sizes from it. I dressed up the two round pole, with a nice colorful cardstock using some hot glue. DSCF2058 I am not a stickler for accurate measurements, hence I just used my visual approximation to see if it sat well. I used E6000 to do the job of the gluing the base of the circle to the stand which will keep it upright. Took some red patterned ribbon and hot glued it all around the circumference of the stands. DSCF2063 DSCF2066 I kept some weight on the center of the stand and let it sit for nearly 2 days and later tested it with a couple of empty cups to check durability and stability. DSCF2067 DSCF2069 DSCF2071 So voila ~ here it is ! A cupcake stand made out of cardboard ! Something creative, innovative and making it convenient on the environment !

DSCF2173 DSCF2175 Although this is traditionally for cupcakes, but you can easily alter it to use it as a display piece in a store, or to keep jewelry on. The uses are only limited by your imagination ! DSCF2176 DSCF2177 I will be using a large doily before presenting the cupcakes on the cupcake stand ofcourse. If your wondering how to do so, just place the doily over the stand and roughly pencil out how much circle would need to be taken off in the center. Then make a slit any one side of the doily and cut towards the center and carry on cutting in the direction of the penciled out center circle. I did not want to place the doily already, since it might catch dust sitting on my study desk. Please give me your opinion ~ I would really appreciate it. Upcycle Wooden Blocks / Plaque for Family.

Hello friends !

Pinerest is my best friend !!!! Yeah ~ I know what you’re thinking ! ! But the honest truth is that I can spend a great many hours browsing from one link to another, pinning as I go along. Feeling cheerful just sharing some of the pins ~ and feeling so inspired when I read some of the talented ladies writing something like, “If I can do it, surely so can you” !!! It is just a crafters haven, I tell you. Its as though, one can virtually get lost in the hoards and hoards of pins and excieting projects !! Why would’nt it be my best friend !

Oh and BTW if your looking for my pin account, here it is :- http://pinterest.com/doodlebuddies/ and NO ~ Pinterest did not pay me to write about them !!!

Somewhere, last August, I was so inspired by some of the gorgeous wood projects on blocks on Pinerest , that I decided to give it a try. Armed with some deadly arsenal of power tools, I made my way back from ACE hardware and started collecting pieces of wood and MDF. It didnt take long before an entire corner in the courtyard was home to a huge pile of wood, wooden planks and left overs. (much to DH’s annoyance)

Today I am sharing with you a rather simple project of wooden blocks which are cut into small chunks using my jigsaw, sanded using the electric sander (as I call it 🙂 ), some paint layers and some modge podge over pieces of scrapbook paper, alphabet diecuts from my revolution and the sentiment for the the definition of family is done by my loyal printer ! The ribbon finalized the look. Voila !!!

Honestly, now that the weather, is getting better, I hope to venture out in the courtyard and try my cutting and sanding skills more. This is really a very easy project but it does take up a large amount of time, becoz there is a waiting period between each paint coat and even between the modge podge coats. The rest is pretty much simple. I have really enjoyed designing this project. It felt so lovely when I had it homed on the mantle above the TV for Eid and almost everyone who came home asked me where I “BOUGHT” it from !!!! 🙂 (huge smile here) (DH is relieved that those heaps of wooden planks are being used)

Like so many of my creative friends have said, if I can do it, so can you.

Pinerest and this entire blog world has made me realize that there are so many creative avenues just waiting for me to make a claim at them. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I could have anything to do with wood and yet, I am trying and gladly getting there !! so can you !!!!!

Please share with me if you too have been inspired to try out something “out of the usual” ~ reaching away from your comfort zone.

I would love to share my new project with the following parties :-

Love Story Bookmark

I’ve always enjoyed making things with stuff lying around. There is just such a genuine joy knowing you were able to create something with bits and pieces. So is true with this very simple yet pretty (if I may say so myself !) bookmark.

The cardstock, DP and circle diecuts are leftovers of other projects ~ and I tell you, I have heaps where these came from 😉

This bookmark is really quite simple and relatively easy to make. Ofcourse I start out with a firm grey colored cardstock and glue some nice polka dotted mustard paper over it. A diecut or two with a lovely digital stamped quote and alittle ribbon/twine to complete it.

And yes, I truly believe in the saying, True love stories never have endings.

Here are the pictures :-

One of the first things that I had bought for the courtyard were these very cute wall mounting terracotta half pots. 6 years later, not only have they aged but the color has turned really pale and ugly. So naturally, that was on top of the to do list.

Unfortunately these pots are mounted in such a way, that they cannot be removed for cleaning purposes, hence I had to manage painting them while they were mounted which seems like quite a challenge. Therefore, I’ll just have to give myself that much leavage for the marks spread on the side 😦

The next project was this bench that I have had for a couple of years which has also borne the brunt of the heat and weather. I have been so inspired by all the coastal & shabby chic look these days, that I decided to paint it white. It isnt perfect by any measure but I love the new look of the bench. So inviting and ideal of an afternoon tea !

The bench was moved from the old location, closer to the entrance and the area behind it with the wire rack where we previously had wine leaves spirally and which later turned into a junk magnet ~~~ was finally cleared !!!

Although it seems the progress is very slow, it is really a lot of hard work and I just know, its going to be worth it. Inshallah. There are many more projects at hand, so I’m just going to link this post to the following parties now :-

The Courtyard/Garden transformation ~ part 1

This post is not for the faint of heart so if your not prepared to see some really catastrophic pictures of a courtyard/garden, I suggest, you turn back NOW ! 🙂

And now for the brave amongst you : For those of you who are not living/have never lived in the middleEast, summers can be a very very very HOT period and this period lasts for nearly 6-7 months in Dubai. Ofcourse “WE” are saved and happiliy sheltered in our air conditioned homes, cars and malls but not so for our gardens/courtyards. Thats the time when most damage takes place on the garden furniture, pots and plants/grass. I mean, c’mon who can withstand + 45*C EVERYDAY for 5-6 Months ????? And hence the courtyard/garden is left to the mercy of Allah swt like everything else in our lives. For the past couple of years, I used to provide shade to my plants using these huge plastic sheets, much to the annoyance of my neigbour, and later, I just gave up

I must confess, the coutyard does tend to become a makeshift area for dumping undecided furniture + laundry area + kid bikes + virtually EVERYTHING !!!

However, this year, with all the visitors expected at Eid and with all the enthusiasm I have bubbling inside me to go the DIY way, I decided to completly “TRY” and transform alittle of the garden so that we could atleast have a nice hot cuppa coffee on Friday mornings in the courtyard or host half a dozen bbqs for our friends.

Here are the shocking pictures of the sun damaged and neglected courtyard from different angels :-

Ofcourse this is just a larger view of the garden. And quite frankly theres more that does NOT meet the eye in these pictures but I am sure with detailed pictures, it will be quite apparent what a HUGE task, I have, athand. I decided to tackle the task, area by area, project by project. In the next few posts, I’m going to share how and what were my DIY projects in the way of upgrading or atleast uplifting the garden. But first, the most important job : getting rid of all those old, worn out, unused, overused and useless pieces of buckets, tanks, bikes, furniture, bbq sets and heaps more.

That alone took us an entire day ! You can imagine WHY ! This was the first van that went to the recycling center.

Thats our gardener giving us a hand at loading the van with all the unwanted stuff. It took an entire day and two truck loads to finally get rid of all the that treasure 🙂

I was too exhausted to take pictures of the second truck !

The transformation, is coming about excellently, piece by piece and area by area. To read more posts, please “follow” or “subscribe” to me and you’ll see how the progress is coming about.

I am linking this post to the following linking parties. Not only will I be glad to get some feedback, some much needed encouragement but I would love to have some wonderful ideas and advice given to me too.
