Upcycle Pizza Box

Hello creative buddies !

Pizza Hut take away boxes are one of my favorite materials to use as canvases and shadow box frames.

Here are some of my other takes on the previous pizza box projects :

Today, I have used ring-pulls to design a heart shape on a pizza box. I love playing with texture and these ring pulls add a unique texture to the project.  I have used a gold matt spray paint finish to subdue the rings.

The process was longer than expected but the end result was well-worth it.

* I did not have to go scavenging for ring pulls since I already collect them and have a huge pile of ring pulls and lids so they come in handy, for such projects.

How did you find this project ?

I continue to share projects that can inspire my friends and readers with ways to reuse/recycle/repurpose/upcycle household items.

Every decision starts with a very small but firm, first step. I hope you embrace the idea of recycling or repurposing this year.

If you have been recycling already,  I would love to read some of your ideas for eco friendly crafts too.

I am sharing this simple project with my blog buddies  here .

I’m delighted that you stopped by.  I hope you stay a while and leave inspired.

Canvas from Cardboard Container

Hello friends. How have the first 11 days of 2019 been ?

Are the resolutions going strong ?

I hope one of the resolutions is to lead a more sustainable existence – Recycle, reuse, repurpose.

upcycle project

We have been rescuing and fostering cats for alittle over 14 years. Presently we have 11 cats. One of the things you’ll find in abundance at my home are ‘cans’.  Your right, cat food cans.

Most of my cats love tuna.  We generally buy bulk cat food when there are some promotions running.  These cans come in packs of three’s within a cardboard packaging.

I have used 3 such Tuna cans cardboard packaging as my canvas.

I gave the cardboard 2 coats of gesso. With sharpie, I outlined the house and colored it with acrylic paints.

I topped it off with a final coat of modge podge.

I love quirky prim houses and tried to give them a cartoonish look.

One of the mistakes, I made was I did not leave too much time for drying between the two gesso coats.  When I began the final acrylic paint, I got a smudge at one of the houses.

The other mistake was that I did not continue the house colors on the side of the cardboard.

Still, I like how it turned out.

So how did you like this innovative canvas ?

Have you ever attempted using anything other than a canvas to paint on ?

DIY Tutorial – Upcycle Broken Frame

I love to salvage ‘stuff’.  I, almost always find inspiration ‘especially’ in broken items.  Unfortunately that also means, that alot of broken items don’t land up in the rubbish bin immediately in my home. (as they should) eg Broken mugs are stored to be used as mosaic material

Would you believe this frame was an empty shell with no base/back or glass infront and now — Ta da !!

we will help you

This frame was found in one of my frame piles and I decided to FINALLY work some of my magic on it.

upcycle broken frame 1

I absolutely love the HOPE sign below, but one of our new fosters (kitten) jumped high enough, to break it.

upcycle broken frame 8

Like I said, its not THAT EASY for things to be chugged in the bin – – –   at my place !!

(the fact that my husband and sons are fed up of my habit is another story for another day though  )

Long story short –

I decided somehow the HOPE sign and the frame would look good together. Here’s a simple tutorial of what followed.

upcycle broken frame 2
The frame did not need to be sanding, so I proceeded with two coats of acrylic paint.
upcycle broken frame 3
Found this light weight, foam backing for the base/back. The frame had hooks intact on the back so I measured the black foam and cut to fit in the back of the frame.
upcycle broken frame 6
For the background, I got some cardboard and painted colors – colors that are generally out of my comfort zone eg yellow, purple, blue !
upcycle broken frame 5
I applied some DAP instant Grab adhesive to glue the two broken spaces on the HOPE letters.
upcycle broken frame 7
Let it rest for atleast 12 -14 hours.
collage art 1
Having painted stripes of cardboard, I went on to roughly place the stripes on the black base foam board to see how the pattern looked.
collage art 2
I decided, I did not want a symmetrical pattern and wanted a random distressed look . I snipped the excess cardboard which had exceeded the black foam’s border.
collage art 3
I measured and placed smaller pieces of cardboard on the empty edges
collage art 7
Then I hot glued all the pieces along with regular PVA glue for additional strength.
collage art 8
Finally I placed the frame over and adhered it from behind.

  • I wanted to give a 3D effect to the sign hence I added a piece of cardboard on the back of the HOPE sign at two places and hot glued the sign to the colorful background.   That way, it gives a popping out impression.
  • I have added random thin golden paint strokes to conceal the spots where it had broken – in turn giving it a more marble-like effect.
  • It is necessary to give one coat of modge podge or varnish on the entire frame and background – so as to make it more durable and it will be easy to clean it in future too (from dust etc since it does not have a glass covering)

I absolutely love how this turned out.  Did you like it too ??

New Year at the Worlds Tallest Tower.

Hello friends.

For all those of you who are celebrating New Year, I pray we all have a blessed, peaceful and creative New Year.

2

I am a Muslim and we follow the Lunar calendar hence our New Year is 1st of Hijri. However, for our day to day practical purposes we refer to the Gregorian calendar.

An occasion or holiday that gives us a chance to be together is cherished.

So, How did you welcome the New Year ?

We are blessed to live in the City that houses the worlds tallest tower, so where best to be at, but The Burj Khalifa !!

burj khalifa dubai

The fireworks were phenomenal, infact, Burj Khalifa also set the record for the longest LED light display on New Years eve.  Ho boy !! It was brilliant.

Ofcourse, entry on Sheikh Zayed road and Financial center road, closed from 10:30 pm.

Needless to say we were not the only smart ones there !!

People had come prepared with flood lights, carpets, tents etc.

We had carried our tables, chairs, blankets and pizzas.

What absolute bliss.

Any occasion is an opportunity to share some special moments with the people who matter the most to you, tolerate you the most and appreciate you the most.

Good health, sound mind and the bliss of a happy family – How can anything be more precious ?

National day crafts to make and decorate

December 2nd is the National Day of United Arab Emirates.

UAE is a diverse country.  It is the central hub for people to meet, work together and develop relationships. This country offers a sense of freedom, security and respect for all beliefs and cultures.

Expats as well as the locals live in perfect harmony here, hence the expats are equally excited and participate in the celebrations, with little children dressed in flag colors and balloons and stickers, badges and sweets being distributed.

From record gathering of flags to breathtaking phenomenal fireworks to fancy luxury cars embossed in national flag colors and bling .. we will be seeing it all !!

While the country is all set for the National day celebration with full pomp and show, I decided to teach my students how to decorate with regular household items to make lovely celebratory decoration and accessories.

We used regular plastic bottles and cut out the base in the shape of a flower. We later applied acrylic paints in the colors of red, green, black and white.  These were then tied up and hung as decoration.
Younger students made these simple trees with various shapes.  The theme centered around the colors used.
We also rolled up newspaper and made these large flowers to stick on the walls.
Work still in progress.
we made the flag out of paper chains.
We bought ribbons of the flag color and cut out “bangles” out of plastic bottle and wrapped it all around the plastic bottle – making a bangle with the flag colors.
We also used nail polish to color “washers” and tied it to these thin ribbons. The kids love accessorizing themselves with these.
How we decorated for National day.
These displayed handicrafts are a part of the UAE culture.  In the olden days, people relied on the resilient Palm tree to provide everything from shade to food to shelter material.  The branches of the palm tree were used to make these baskets, hand fans, bread serving dishes, food mats etc.
The red siting area is just recreated here to show how, in the olden days, they would preferably sit on these hard cushions which can still be found in most homes.
Actually they are quite comfortable.

We wanted to make several more items for the National Day, but felt, slightly limited since all our projects had to have recycled material usage as well as be decorative in nature.

How do you decorate your home, office or school for your National day ?  Do you get your kids involved in the decoration ?

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked these easy and fun creations.

Tutorial DIY -Easy Upcycled Photo Frame

Hello friends,

Do you like to quill ?  I love quilling and I really like collecting  photo frames as well as  frames for paintings.  This project is an ideal mix of both.

Most of my picture frame collection comes from stores like Pan Emirates,  Home Center, Ikea as is section and garage sales.

I’m almost obsessed with finding potential in unexpected mundane objects which are considered trash. Some projects start immediately, while some bare bones, are stacked in the shed, on a waiting list.

The past two weeks, I have been super inspired to work with frames, so at long last, a pile of photo frames are being repurposed and dressed with some simple and easy art. This one, being the first one.

Our guests are pleasantly surprised when they find out that the creations are my own !

I believe, alittle creativity, color and innovation can transform the ugliest objects into pieces of art.

Here is one Ikea frame which I found in the ‘as is’ section which did not have a glass protection in front.  Ofcourse, I was overjoyed 🙂

It was perfect for my three dimensional quilled heart.

I love the contrast of the white frame against a cardboard background – with pink and red flowers in the foreground.  The pearls were a last minute addition but i feel, they really enhance the look of the flowers.

Infact, I think, I will start a wall gallery for all my art frames projects.

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this frugal simple creation.

Tutorial – DIY desk organizer

Hello friends,

upcycle can stationery organizer 0

Two important aspects of any crafters life is inspiration and storage !!  And somehow both these two aspects seem to go hand in hand. Although I “think’ I breeze through, even in a cluttered chaos, I know, I would be much more productive  in a more organized set up, where all my tools and supplies are easily accessible.

I am a visual person – I need my tools to be seen, so as to be able to use them. A punch which is tucked away in one of my bins, generally does NOT get played with – AT ALL 😦

So these past weeks, i used up most of my “recyclable stock pile” and made a few desk organizers.

I hope you enjoy this pictorial and find some inspiration to use up those cans lying around in the kitchen.

upcycle can stationery organizer 1
Clean cans thoroughly and organize them in a rectangular or circular manner.

Upcycle Can Stationery Organizer 11
Although i have brush – painted two coats of acrylic colors on these cans, I would recommend spray paint cans

upcycle can stationery organizer 14

Decide in which order, you’d like to place the cans.

Upcycle Can Stationery Organizer 13
Gather the cans together and glue them together on the sides where they meet each other

Upcycle Can stationery Organizer 12
The 1 kg yoghurt bucket, comes with a white handle which fit in, snugly in the middle container, so that I could be lifted.

Upcycle Can Stationery Organizer 10
So as to enforce them together, I wrapped them with a large ribbon. You can use any fabric, ribbon or even jute or twine. I also adhered this lovely frill ribbon from Daiso, on the edge.

Upcycle Can Stationery Organizer 5

upcycle can stationery organizer 8
I am using the lid of the cookie box as the base of the organizer.  I used STRONG STIK glue to stick the cans to the base. It is a remarkable glue, which I bought from Creative Minds.

Upcycle Can stationery organizer 9
I was not quite satisfied with the ribbon, hence I added two thinner orange ribbons on the border to give it a more defined look.

This silver stand had not been used in decades, so it was more than happy with its new found job role !!  It provided a much needed height and was quite stable. We don’t want a stand that could topple all the contents.

Upcycle can stationery organizer 2UPCYCLE CAN STATIONERY ORGANIZER 7upcycle can stationery organizer 3

And there you have it !

I love how all my promarkers, copics and paint markers are all now easily accessible. Its such a huge relief and joy.

I’m inspired to make a few more of these to house my scissors and paintbrushes etc.

Please drop in a line to tell me if and how, you liked this frugal creation.

  • Food cans
  • lid from cookie tin.
