DIY Jewelry display stands

Hello friends. How have you been ?

DIY JEWELRY STAND

I’m delighted to share with you guys a new development –  I have been designing handmade statement jewelry !!!   What a leap – in terms of creativity, atleast !!!

Please drop me a like at https://www.instagram.com/madelineposh/

We held a trunk show at The Villa a few months back; the details of which will be in an upcoming post.  One of the things, that I realized is that most of my necklaces were long and most of the display stands, I had, were short display units for the table stands.  Hence, I improvised.

I bought some white foam sheet and designed a display stand – however, quickly I realized that the stand was not large enough, inorder to allow my neck pieces to hang freely.

Also, it meant that I would need to make atleast 70 of these boards ! Plan A did not work out.

Plan B –  I’ve stored several bulletin boards (cork ones) in the shed. Time to make use of them.

I decided that these bulletin boards would be ideal since they could carry multiple strands and would be sturdy as well. However alittle prepping was in order. Here are some photos explaining what I’ve done.

A couple of coats of paint, and we’ll be ready in no time.

One of these boards had a large hole in it. I decided that for this one, we would place some dark blue, thin fabric over it, so as to hide the damage.  It worked so well coz we did not even have to glue or staple it – the push pin did the job !!!

Tip – Cork soaks up alot of paint.  The final coat is drying here.

I spray painted these push-pins to a dark shade of grey/black. These would be the hooks on my display board.

VOILA !!!

I love the look and how perfectly, everything fit in.

These are easy to store and very convenient to carry around too.

The length of the boards, helps to bring out the flow and drop of the necklaces.

Its a win win situation for me.

I love upcycling and I love to repurpose mundane objects.  How about you ? What was your last upcycle project ?

I am sharing this post with all my blog friends here.

Upcycled chalk board tray.

Hey friends ! How’ve you been ?

If you’ve been following me, then you know, that the past couple of weeks have been nothing short of a roller coaster ride for me. I have been participating in several weekend fairs and exhibitions. Not only has it been exhaustive but for a change, we have been such an “outdoorish” family !!

I have been loving the fairs, interacting with people, getting little hands to try out crafts and just having a blast letting these events dry the creative juices out of me !! Its been fun.

I am one of those people who works best under pressure. I have a tendency to try out a dozen projects for a couple of days, and then there are those ‘slumpy’ days when I am glued to pinterest/fb and almost never enter the studio for weeks.

This particular chalk board tray was from ELC, I think. The boys used it for a couple of years until we moved into Warqa House and then, it gave in 😦  I loved the thin wooden tray used to keep chalks and dusters on both sides.  It was a shame to let it go, given it was made of wood and I really like those cheerful snakes/worms. So I unscrewed the trays and it remained as a stationery organizer sitting parallel to eachother on Sawaab’s desk.

Long story short. While the past few weeks have been full of finding dumped tree trunks and branches and utilizing them in various ways.  I decided, I could give that tray a facelift. The best way to organize on a busy study desk is to go vertical  ! I cut out two chunks of wood trunks and used the drill machine to drill some holes in them from above and bottom.

From not having a place to keep the pair, we not have 2 boys quarreling over who gets to keep it to display their stationery !!

I decided against painting the trunks ~ Love the rustic look against the comical child-like colors of the trays.

I love how the little branch protrudes from the main trunk. I deliberately trimmed it and kept it that way. I feel it adds character to piece. Do you ?

This was one of my fastest projects to date !! It was over in just a matter of minutes. So if you too have any two pieces of shelves that could be given a similar look, please share it with me.

Thank you for visiting me today & I hope you enjoyed my little creative idea.

Pizza box turned to Shadow box !

Two weeks back, I participated in one of these creative group challenges on facebook. They asked to work on some form of altered art on a shadow box. Naturally everyone participating, rushed to Ikea to pick shadow boxes worth dhs 30 !  Frugal me instead, decided to improvise. We have a tradition in our home of having a pizza party every Friday afternoon. My husband loves to pamper the boys on the one day he is at home with us. ( That minus the almost 5 other days, we have a meal out !)

Since Pizza Hut’s meal for four has two medium size boxes, I generally don’t dispose those boxes after the meal. They get stacked up in my new white cupboard which stocks all “recycleable ” stuff like cat food tins/cans, pringle tubes, empty toilet rolls and what have you ! You get the idea, don’t you !! Yes, very few things find their way into the bin in this house  🙂  I suppose, Dubai Muncipality should be appreciating my efforts to keep a recycling center right IN my house !!  🙂

Anyways, back to the story :- So naturally I turn to the pizza box and try to envision the transformation !!  Strangely,  its really not so difficult to make at all !

Here’s the process :-

I measured a large square on the back or base of the box  { it is more sturdy since it gets additional support from the three adjoining sides } almost 1 inch away from the edge on all four sides. Make a crease on that line so that cutting thru it will be easier.  Then cut thru the measured square on all four sides with a sharp  blade. I used my steel ruler/scale to give me direction and support. BTW, this particular project did not use a pizza hut box instead it is of another pizza company.

DSCF2079

Once the face/base of the box was cut off, I then measured a large 12 x 12 scrapbooking paper as per the dimensions of the inside of the box. Applied some white glue to the paper and adhered it to the box inside.

DSCF2078

This is the stage where the box is now ready for all the decoration to drop on it.  Let the designing begin !

DSCF2080

Since I had a rough idea of how I wanted it to look, I divided the box into four parts. The top being the largest while the below had three nearly equal parts. It was divided by a black polka dot ribbon on top and black thin left-over cardstock. Strangely enough, this is the part that took the longest and I made a couple of goof ups here !!

DSCF2081

I had planned to keep the theme romantic, hence I distressed some blue wooden alphabets spelling “Love” and glued them haphazardly on the top half of the box. Later I cut three heart shapes out of a story book paper  and gently glued them together in the center. I then glued the hearts on the boxes in the below part. I repeated this process twice for the other two parts as well.

DSCF2082

I made spiral flowers out of some left over papers and adhered them with hot glue towards the top right side of the “love sign” and the bottom left side too. Some small flowers were also glued for an added effect.

DSCF2083

For the frame look of the shadow box. I measured and cut four stripes of patterned paper and attached it to the “frame” !

and ……….. Voila !!

<a

It took less than an 1 1/2 hour to finish this entire project and apart from the wooden alphabets, I am sure, everyone carries almost all of the said items in their homes !

So ? What’d you think ?   I really hope, I have inspired some one out there. to try out something similar  !!

Please feel free to tell me how you liked my ‘ pizza box turned shadow box’ . Oh yeah, my creativity and thinking out of the box, did cost me !!  Sadly, the challenge was for a shadow box and they disapproved the transformation of the pizza box to the shadow box !!! They decided they did not want to accept anything less than a prim and proper shadow box !!

So I licked my wounds and then licked some more, for a couple of days and later, pushed my disappointments into making a whole lot of more pizza boxes into shadow boxes ! !!  Folks, that’s Naush for you !!!  Down but not for long :)))

Frankly,  I had a lot of fun, visualizing, then designing, then goofing up, then re-designing, and then actually improving and making it work for me !! Challenge or not ~ competition or not ~ I am happy with my little project. How about you ?

Have you ever been let down by some silly rule of any challenge after making a real effort to participate ? I mean, everyone is always talking about thinking out of the box these days, well  I literally did think “out of the box” and guess where it got me !!!  🙂

Have a beautiful day friends and thank you so much for visiting me today.

The courtyard / Garden Transformation ~ part 3

I meant to upload this post earlier but the season of fairs and festivities is taking its toll on my time. We have participated in several fairs this season and needless to say, its been quite fullfilling as well as profitable. Perhaps my only regret is that I dont have much time to cultivate more hobbies !

For those of you, who are new to my blog,  perhaps you’d like to check out the previous two courtyard transforamations 1 and 2 !

Here are some more of the garden makeover pictures. The garden looks amazingly inviting so far.

The area right infront of my kitchen, where you can see the arch is where, we would generally keep all the sensitive plants and the bbq sets and ofcourse, heaps of buckets, full of samie’s bird food ! Ofcouse a whole lot of crap was also housed there, which I took great relief in dumping. Here are those pics.

Yes, I know, its ugly and repulsive but then .. … .. .. ……………..TADDA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All the bbq sets were dumped. Buckets replaced and organized. Plants out in the courtyard. And all my display wire racks were given a new shelter. I know, they arent perfectly safe from the occasional rains this season brings with it. But atleast there is some relief knowing there is a little covering over them.

This candle holder is actually for wall mounting but I decided to keep it on the glass table after some simple spray painting.

Heres it new look :

Gorgeous ! aint it ???

Finally, it was time to tackle the garden chairs. We have two separate set of garden tables and chairs. One set is the wicker bucket chairs in brown and the other are the Home Center Brown beach chairs. Although the initial plan was only to paint the beach chairs, I got carried away and did the wicker chairs in white as well.

I know this side shows just how neglected the poor area is but just wait and watch for the new look :

Pretty, isnt it ??

These pine cones were picked up in our trip to Turkey.  Naturally like all things, I had some plans for these too. Which just got laid back in the backburner for sometime until now, when I thought they were the perfect center table accessory.

The kids were a great help in turning these into gorgeous gold matt painted treasures. I completly love the new look :

Bit by bit the garden is getting where I hoped it would. There are several small and large projects still at hand but for now, I am pleased and will upload the ariel pictures in my next post.

I’d really like to give a whole lot of credit to all my sons without whom, it would have been a nightmare getting all these projects sorted out. As much as I am a “pain” and a real nasty task master, they happily encourage me and give me a hand so readily, even when they feel exhausted. May Allah swt bless them with good health and success in their lives, Ameen.
